Job summary

The practice has an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Dispenser at the practice. Full training will be given at the practice and you will also be supported whilst you undertake a level 2 qualification in dispensing.

Hours: 25 hours per week

Monday 08.30 - 17.30 (1 hour lunch)

Wednesday 08.30 - 17.30 (1 hour lunch)

Friday 08.30 - 18.30 (1 hour lunch)

Under supervision, you will provide timely, efficient and accurate dispensing of medication to the patients and to assist the Practice in ensuring effective financial control of the dispensary working to agreed practice Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times.

As a member of staff with direct contact with patients, to represent the practice in a friendly and professional manner at all times.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in a general practice environment. Team working and flexibility are essential.

About us

Nettleham Medical Practice is a semi rural practice situated 3 miles north of Lincoln and currently has approximately 12,500 patients. There are two sites, with Nettleham being the main site and a branch surgery at Cherry Willingham.

The practice is part dispensing and is an accredited training practice who regularly have GP Registrars, undergraduate doctor and nursing medical students and also host pharmacy students.

Job Summary:

To train to carry out the following:

To provide timely, efficient and accurate dispensing of medication to the patients and to assist the Practice in ensuring effective financial control of the dispensary working to agreed practice Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times.

As a member of staff with direct contact with patients, to represent the practice in a friendly and professional manner at all times.

Job Responsibilities:

Dispensing
  • Dispensing acute prescriptions.
  • Dispensing repeat prescriptions requests received from telephone calls, electronically and in paper format for dispensing.
  • Dispensing private prescriptions.
  • Checking colleagues dispensing.
  • Monitored Dose systems (MDS) dispensing and checking.
  • Use of SystmOne stock control software for labelling.
  • The correct endorsing of prescriptions at the time of dispensing.
  • The dispensing of all controlled drugs and the maintaining of accurate controlled drug ledgers at all times.
  • Ensuring the Dispensary area remains clean and tidy.
  • Make sure adequate supply of stationery i.e. computer labels/prescription

Prescriptions
  • Handing out prescriptions and collecting charges when appropriate.
  • Taking prescription repeats requests over the telephone and at the dispensary hatch.
  • Collecting private charges for black listed medications, vaccines and holiday prophylactic medication.
  • Sorting, stamping and endorsing prescriptions.
  • Ensuring that the reverse of all prescriptions are completed correctly at the time of collection by a patient.
  • Generating prescriptions.
  • Answer patient queries on medication in liaison with the doctors
  • Liaise with Practice Nurses for stock and prescription orders
  • Answering of SystmConnect queries
  • Sending of SMS texts via SystmOne as necessary
Stock Control
  • Ordering appropriate quantities of goods via the wholesalers computer link.
  • Checking goods as and when they are delivered.
  • Returning incorrect goods to the wholesalers.
  • Cleaning, stocking shelves, refrigerators and other storage areas using rotation method.
  • Removing out of date stock from the shelves, refrigerators and other storage areas.
  • Disposal of returned unused medicines and out of date stock.

Dispensary Administration

The post holder at times will be required to undertake dispensary administration tasks which may include any of the following:

  • Reconciliation of wholesaler invoices or contractor invoices
  • Maintaining of MDS patient details and medication.
  • Ordering of dispensary consumables such as bags, labels, MDS trays etc
  • Ordering of dispensary stationery
  • Monthly balancing of the controlled drug registers
  • Destruction of returned controlled drugs from patients
