Job summary
Southend Victoria Primary Care Network is seeking an experienced GP Assistant to support the network in the safe and efficient delivery of prescribing services across multiple practices.
This role has a strong focus on prescription processing and medicines management, alongside supporting GPs with associated administrative tasks. The post holder will play a key role in ensuring prescriptions are processed accurately, efficiently, and in line with clinical and legal requirements, freeing up GP time to focus on direct patient care.
Main duties of the job
The GP Assistant / Prescription Clerk will act as a key liaison between the administrative team, clinicians, NHS services, and patients to promote safe, effective, and efficient care delivery across the PCN.
The role combines prescription processing, administrative support, patient-facing clinical tasks, and care navigation, working within clearly defined professional boundaries and under appropriate clinical supervision.
The post holder will work flexibly across practices within the PCN and contribute to improving patient flow, medicines safety, and GP capacity

Process acute, repeat, and electronic prescriptions in line with practice and PCN protocols
Manage prescription queries from patients, pharmacies, and clinicians
Support medicines management, identifying and escalating discrepancies
Manage Accurx/ Anima tasks within agreed timescales Process clinical documents, correspondence, and coding SNOMED/read coding
Manage Accurx/ Anima tasks within agreed timescales
Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-ups
Complete non-clinical sections of insurance, benefits, and administrative forms
Provide reception and care navigation support as required
Undertake clinical support tasks where trained and competent e.g. observations, BP, urine dip, ECGs, phlebotomy
See patients prior to GP review to take observations and brief histories
Work flexibly across practices within the PCN
Liaise with GPs, admin teams, pharmacies, NHS services, and external agencies
Communicate effectively with patients and carers, adapting communication methods as needed
Contribute to safe, coordinated, patient-centred care

- Experience working in a healthcare or primary care setting
- Strong experience processing prescriptions
- Excellent attention to detail and understanding of prescribing safety
- Ability to prioritise a high-volume workload
- Good communication and IT skills
- Understanding of confidentiality and information governance
- GP Assistant qualification (or willingness to undertake training)
- Experience using SystmOne, Accurx & Anima
- NHS / General Practice experience
Desirable
- Training and development will be provided, including GP Assistant qualification
- Participation in annual appraisal, mandatory training, and PCN induction is required
