Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive GP Assistant to join our friendly and busy GP Practice.

General Practice Assistants form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care, and provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined with basic clinical duties, helping to free up GPs time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments and improving patients' experience.

The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication and organisation skills, and have the ability to work as part of an integrated multi-skilled team, within a fast-paced environment. Flexibility is essential along with being an effective team player.

Main duties of the job

The GPA will support the GP(s) smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration and clinical tasks on behalf of the GP freeing up their time to focus on the patient.

The practice has a friendly team of GP's, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and physicians associate along with the admin and reception teams.

The role will be full time worked on a rota covering the hours 07:45 - 18:30 Monday to Friday

Job responsibilities

* Assisting with the clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.

* Assisting with the filtering on-line consultations to ensure the patient sees the right clinician at the right time.

* Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes

* Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients

* Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.

* Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs & phlebotomy

* Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc GPA Competency Framework 2

* Explaining treatment procedures to patients

* Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g. getting an on call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s)

Qualifications

Essential

  • *A minimum of five GCSEs, ideally at grades A - C, but equivalent level of work experience will be considered.

Desirable

  • Experience in blood taking, performing ECG's, basic wound care, Taking blood pressure
