Main duties of the job

  • Oversee the day-to-day running of Roxbourne Medical Centre, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery

  • Lead and manage clinical and administrative teams, fostering a supportive and motivated workforce

  • Manage financial activities including budgeting, billing, and resource allocation

  • Ensure compliance with NHS and regulatory requirements and maintain high-quality standards

  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and practice initiatives to enhance patient care and operational efficiency

  • Build strong relationships with patients, local health providers, and external partners

  • Drive continuous improvement projects aimed at increasing patient satisfaction and service excellence

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Business Manager will lead on finance and strategic business functions, supporting the GP Principal and Operations Manager to ensure the practice remains financially sustainable, compliant, and well positioned for future growth.

Finance & Strategic Planning

  • Oversee practice finances, including income maximisation, cash flow monitoring, forecasting, reviewing statements, and ensuring timely submission and payment of invoices.

  • Submit mandatory yearly data and year-end figures in coordination with the accountant.

  • Manage pensions, PAYE, payroll, and partners drawings, ensuring GDPR and CQC compliance.

  • Present clear financial forecasts and performance reports to the GP Principal.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities for new income streams (e.g., enhanced services, PCN funding, private services).

  • Support long-term business planning and sustainability alongside the GP Principal and Operations Manager.

Governance & Compliance

  • Support the Operations Manager with CQC compliance, including preparation for inspections, policies, and protocols.

  • Oversee financial and business risk management, ensuring systems are in place to safeguard the practice.

  • Ensure information governance and data protection requirements (GDPR) are embedded in practice systems.

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Business Continuity and Resilience Plans.

Contracts & Procurement

  • Secure and manage service contracts (cleaning, utilities, insurances, telephony, maintenance) ensuring best value for money.

  • Oversee procurement of equipment and supplies, maintaining adequate stock levels in collaboration with the Operations Manager.

  • Negotiate, review, and monitor supplier and vendor agreements.

Clinical & Service Support

  • Work with the practice nurse to review QOF and enhanced services, ensuring effective delegation of tasks to maximise income and point attainment.

  • Support digital transformation projects, including the implementation of online consultations, NHS App, and other digital tools.

  • Oversee patient engagement mechanisms (e.g., patient participation group, surveys, complaints analysis) to ensure feedback informs business decisions.

  • Any new contract implementation

PCN & External Relations

  • Manage PCN finances, ensuring timely claims, payments, and disbursements.

  • Maintain effective relationships with the ICB, PCN, NHSE, CCG, and other external stakeholders.

  • Represent the practice at external meetings relevant to finance, business, and strategic

Secondary-Occasional Responsibilities of the Finance Manager

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Finance Manager may be requested to:

  • Deputise for the Operations Manager during periods of absence.

  • Provide support to the Operations Manager in maintaining and updating the Business Continuity Plan.

  • Act as the delegated lead for finance-related matters with NHSE, the CCG, and the practice accountant when required.

  • Participate in internal and external audits as requested by the audit lead.

  • Represent the practice at external meetings relating to finance or operational management on behalf of the leadership team.

  • Provide additional support to PCN activities where required, beyond core financial management.
