An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic paramedic to join our supportive team. You need to be flexible and be able to work alongside others as part of a team, for whom supporting each other is very important.

You will be helping patients who are feeling unwell and are concerned about their health therefore you must be a caring, trustworthy person who has compassion and understanding.

Main duties of the job

The main part of your day will be consulting face to face with patients in their own homes or at the surgery who have an acute issue. Acting within your professional boundaries and with the support of the duty team, you will take initial history, perform clinical assessment, diagnose, treat and evaluate response. You will work across all age groups including young children.

Depending on your skill you may provide some follow up treatment.

You will demonstrate safe, critical clinical decision-making and expert care, including assessment and diagnostic skills, for patients within the general practice.

You will support other members of the team, and share learning throughout the surgery.

About us

Spinney Brook is spread over 2 sites to better serve the local community. We provide primary health care for 11500 patients who live in Irthlingborough and the surrounding villages.

You will be supported by a team including 7 GPs, 10 nurses of various competency, HCA, dispensing and administrative staff. The team is backed up by various ARRS including physiotherapist, paramedic, mental health support team, Agewell and social prescribers, safeguarding team and onsite pharmacist.

We have regular in-house and organisational meetings and like to involve the whole team in driving change/ improvement and share learning with in the surgery.

Job description

Job responsibilities

We appreciate not all clinicians will be able to full fill the full job description from day 1, especially if they do not have primary care experience. Training will be provided where required and the role will grow with the successful candidate.

Act as an emergency care practitioner, demonstrating advanced clinical competence and a knowledge base beyond those associated with conventional nursing roles

Undertake consultations with patients as an autonomous practitioner and using own clinical judgement to diagnose, treat, refer and/or discharge patients

Make direct referrals to primary, secondary and social services within locally agreed pathways, guidance and protocols

Provide clinical advice to Reception staff where required

Ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care, delivered in a timely manner

Ensure complete and accurate documentation of each and every patient contact

Work as an autonomous practitioner and as part of multi-disciplinary and multiagency teams in order to ensure patients needs are met

Recognise and work within own competence and professional code of conduct as regulated by the HCPC and College of Paramedics.

Act as the emergency care lead for the practice, reviewing emergency protocols and providing updates and training to staff as appropriate

Enhance own performance through continuous professional development, keep up to date with current evidence-based practice, and impart own knowledge and skills to PCN colleagues to meet the needs of the service

Implement and participate in vaccination programmes as appropriate

Be able to:

i. perform specialist health checks and reviews

ii. perform and interpret ECGs; alongside other results as appropriate

iii. perform investigatory procedures as required

iv. undertake the collection of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs, etc.

v. perform investigatory procedures needed by patients and those requested by GPs and the wider PCN

vi. perform a domicillary (home) visit

Support the delivery of anticipatory care and lead certain community services (e.g. monitoring blood pressure and diabetes risk of elderly patients living in sheltered housing)

Undertake clinical audits

Communicate proactively and effectively with all colleagues across the multi disciplinary team, attending and contributing to meetings as required and accepting referrals and referring to specialist services where appropriate

Prescribe, issue and review medications as appropriate following policy, patient group directives, NICE (national) and local clinical guidelines and local care pathways. This will be done in accordance with evidence-based practice and national and practice protocols, and within scope of practice N.B relevant if possesses prescribing qualification only.

Assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate treatment and or interventions and care for patients presenting with an undifferentiated diagnosis, and patients with complex needs within the clinical and domiciliary setting.

Clinically examine and assess patient needs from a physiological and psychological perspective, and plan clinical care accordingly

Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care.

Take an active part in achievement of contractual markers.
