Health Care Assistant with Reception/Admin duties

Job summary

To assist clinical team in the care of Practice patients to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education. The post will also include some reception and administrative duties.

They will act as a focal point of communication between patients, doctors, nurses and other members of the primary health care team in GP Practice.

The HCA will work under the direct supervision of the Practice Nurse or GP Partners and will comply with Guidelines and Protocols at all times.

Main duties of the job

Migrant patient registration checks, Urine dipstick testing, Phlebotomy.

Weight monitoring, Spirometry if trained, Domiciliary Bloods, ECG if trained, flu vaccination, -NHS Health Check, 24 hour BP Monitoring, Diabetes foot check , Learning Disability and SMI health chech

Telephone patients for recalls.

To be responsible for the correct maintenance and cleaning of surgical equipment if needed in accordance with current Health and Safety Practice Policies and Procedures.

Ordering of medical supplies, maintaining stock; re-stocking of all clinical areas.

Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy

To monitor vaccine fridge temperature and cleaning of the fridge when applicable

Be aware and maintain standards of Infection control.

Instruct patient in appropriate techniques or tasks.

To be aware of his/her boundaries of work to prevent harm to the patient, understand

Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the Practice team.

Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports.

Attend and participate in Practice and clinical meetings as required.

To create and send recall letters for clinics.

To assist in seasonal and special projects as requested e.g. flu campaign.

To participate in the reception Rota on a weekly basis

Job responsibilities

-Provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals within the Practice. Weight monitoring, Spirometry if trained, Domiciliary Bloods, ECG if trained, flu vaccination, -NHS Health Check, 24 hour BP Monitoring, Diabetes foot check, Learning Disability and Severe Mental Illness review if trained

-Perform a blood pressure check using a protocol.

-Perform mini-mental tests subject to competencies.

-Telephone patients for recalls.

-To be responsible for the correct maintenance and cleaning of surgical equipment if needed in accordance with current Health and Safety Practice Policies and Procedures.

-To be responsible for the ordering of medical supplies, maintaining stock; re-stocking of all clinical areas. To act as a chaperone as required to GPs and Practice Nurses.

-Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy

-To maintain an adequate amount of clinical supplies and health promotion materials as agreed with Senior Nurse/GPs and to restock all rooms as appropriate.

-To monitor vaccine fridge temperature and cleaning of the fridge when applicable

-Record patient data accurately, concisely and legibly and in a way that could be used as evidence in any legal proceeding.

-Be aware and maintain standards of Infection control.

-Instruct patient in appropriate techniques or tasks.

-To be aware of maintaining patient/client confidentiality at all times, unless the HCA has concerns with regard the personal safety/wellbeing of the patient/client or that of others. In these circumstances it is expected that the HCA will share the information with the registered nurse mentor or other appropriate health team member.

-Will not undertake any task or element of care until he/she has been assessed as competent by an appropriately trained registered nurse or doctor.

-To be aware of his/her boundaries of work to prevent harm to the patient, understand

the term Duty of Care and to always act in the best interests of the patient/client.

-To act in such a manner as to support the patient at all times and being mindful of the

need to reduce anxiety for the patient.

It is anticipated HCAs will develop skills in respecting patient/clients rights, preferences, choices, culture, identity, communication, Health and Safety and promoting health.

2. Administration and professional responsibilities

Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the Practice team.

Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports.

Assist in formulation of Practice philosophy, strategy and policy.

Restocking and maintenance of clinical areas and consulting rooms

To audit data when required e.g. use clinical audit to identify patients in need of reviews. To be able to operate Open Exeter to enable batch downloads for screening and
