Main duties of the job
In accordance with Practice Policies and Procedures and the duties and responsibilities outlined in the Medical Receptionist role, the post holder will be required to provide high quality administrative support in a professional, respectful and confidential manner to patients at all times
About us
Derwent Practice is a large and well-established family friendly Practice within the Malton Community, rated good by CQC in 2023. We have a dedicated and supportive team of healthcare professionals, including 10 GP Partners, Salaried GPs, Practice Nurses, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Mental Health Practitioners as well as a full complement of support staff. Our multi-disciplinary approach allows us to provide comprehensive and personalised care to our patients and fosters a welcoming environment for all.
Derwent Practice is part of The North Riding Primary Care Network, founded in 2019 which has four member practices. As a network we collaborate on several projects to address health inequalities and share best practice.
With a patient population of 21,000 patients, Derwent Practice also provides medical care and treatment to 4 local care homes (a combination of both residential and nursing homes), supported living settings and also provides medical care cover for the local community hospital for a number of inpatients. In addition to care provided for our local community, we are dedicated to training future generations of healthcare professionals and are associated with Hull-York Medical School and Coventry University where we provide training to foundation Doctors and Student Nurses.

Job responsibilities
- To assist the doctors and nurses to provide a good standard of Primary Healthcare for patients in a respectful, professional and confidential manner.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, carers, relatives and any other visitors in a professional and respectful manner at all times.
- Maintain the computerised
appointment system (including home visits) and monitor flow of patients into consulting and treatment
rooms
- To be able to respond to
all queries and requests for assistance from patients, seeking assistance from
colleagues as required.
- To advise patients of
charges for private services, accept payment and issue receipts.
- To handle urgent calls
in a logical and calm manner and allocate visits.
- To handle 'urgent'
telephone results, document appropriately and pass to a GP in a timely manner.
- Manage all calls via care
navigation, signposting and allocate appropriately as per practice protocol.
- Receive and make
telephone calls, divert calls and take messages as appropriate.
- Deal with tasks and
emails daily in an appropriate timely manner.
- To be competent in
carrying out start of day and end of day procedures.
- Provide cover for colleagues during holiday and sickness absence.
- Work flexibly and within practice policies and procedures to cover all aspects of reception work.
- Provide a reception service to patients collecting prescriptions and other documents from the Practice
- Ensure all visitors to the Practice sign in as appropriate, adhering to Practice Health and Safety Policies and Procedures, and alerting Management of their presence.
- Assist with any other administrative tasks as appropriate within Practice
- Any other duties as delegated by the Management and Clinical team.
The above constitute the main responsibilities
