Job summary

Beacon Primary Care is an innovative, forward-thinking GP practice serving approximately 17,000 patients across four sites in West Lancashire. We are seeking an enthuastic, motivated part-time Prescription Clerk to join our busy and supportive administrative team, Mondays and Tuesdays 08.30 - 17.00.

We are a large, friendly and well established practice with a strong reputation for innovation, collaboration and excellent clinical outcomes.

This is a key role within the practice andrequires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, as patient safety is central to prescription processing. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely processing of prescription requests, while supporting patients and clinicians with medication queries.

The successful candidate will be organised, detail-oriented, and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication skills are essential, as the role involves liaising with patients, clinicians, pharmacies, and external healthcare providers.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate must be able to manage a high volume of work while maintaining strict patient confidentiality and information governance standards.

Experience managing prescription queries or working with community pharmacies would be advantageous.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Processing routine prescription requests via EMIS, email, and AccuRx within two working days

  • Managing prescription queries and liaising with the Meds Management Lead, Practice Manager, and clinical team as required

  • Communicating with pharmacies, patients, nursing homes, and hospitals regarding medication queries

  • Ensuring patients are informed promptly of any medication changes

  • Supporting medicines optimisation, including synchronising repeat medications

  • Identifying overdue medication reviews and arranging appointments with the clinical pharmacist

  • Managing medication supply issues by liaising with pharmacies or the medicines optimisation team

  • Monitoring medication usage to identify potential over- or under-ordering

  • Updating patient records in line with hospital correspondence

  • Undertaking other administrative duties as required to support the smooth running of the practice

  • highlighting any medication queries, early requests, or safety concerns to the clinical team or prescribing lead

Job responsibilities

  • Process routine prescription requests via Emis email and AccuRx within 2 working days of receipt.
  • Manage prescription queries accordingly.
  • Liaise with Practice Manager and clinical team with any areas of concern.
  • Liaise with medicines management team relating to any queries.
  • Ensure that patients are notified immediately of any medicines changes.
  • Liaise with chemists, patients, nursing homes and hospitals when needed.
  • Synchronise medicines that are on repeat so they all finish at the same time.
  • If a medication review for a patient is overdue, book the patient with the clinical pharmacist.
  • If there is a manufacturer's or supply problem, liaise with the chemist or medicines optimisation team for an alternative. Issue prescription and advise patient of the change.
  • Check for over and under usage of medication.
  • Any other reasonable administrative duties as directed by the Meds Management lead, The Practice Manager or Partners.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to data protection regulations.
  • The practice has Protocols in place for Clinical and Administrative tasks, staff are required to adhere to all Practice Protocols, it is essential that all staff keep up to date with protocols and advise of any changes needed. All protocols are stored on the Practice Intranet.
  • Apply Practice policies, protocols, standards and guidance
  • Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, protocols, standards and guidelines will affect own work
  • Participate in audits where appropriate
