Main duties of the job

  • Deliver high-quality, compassionate, and person-centred care under the supervision of registered nurses.

  • Monitor, record, and report changes in patients conditions to the Clinical team.

  • Carry out clinical tasks such as taking observations, performing wound care.

  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to promote health, wellbeing, and recovery.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and uphold professional standards of care and confidentiality.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

The Nursing Associate will work within their scope of practice and in accordance with the NMC Code, supported by supervision from a Senior Nurse. While core duties are outlined below, there may be occasions when other reasonable tasks are required, depending on workload and staffing.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Carry out chronic disease management reviews and support patients with long-term conditions using a holistic, person-centred approach.

  • Undertake routine patient care tasks as directed by nurses or GPs, including vital signs, observations, wound care, and assisting with minor procedures.

  • Administer prescribed medications (e.g. nebulisers, subcutaneous or intramuscular injections) in line with NMC standards and Patient Specific Directions.

  • Support health promotion and disease prevention initiatives, including NHS Health Checks and opportunistic patient education.

  • Accurately document consultations and clinical care following NMC and practice guidelines.

  • Recognise and act upon signs of patient deterioration or safeguarding concerns, referring to senior staff as appropriate.

  • Maintain infection prevention and control standards and assist in emergency response, including anaphylaxis and CPR.

  • Chaperone patients during examinations and assist GPs with clinics (e.g. family planning, minor surgery).

  • Undertake specimen collection and basic investigations such as swabs, ECGs, urine cultures, and blood glucose testing.

  • Support CQC compliance, QOF recalls, and local clinical audits.

Extended Duties (Following Training)
  • Perform cervical cytology and vaccination programmes (childhood, influenza, travel, etc.).

  • Provide general and specific health screening and advice, referring to GPs when required.

  • Monitor and manage clinical stock, refrigeration, and emergency equipment.

  • Collect, store, and dispatch pathological specimens, ensuring appropriate equipment cleaning and record keeping.

Professional and Administrative Responsibilities
  • Work within professional competencies and the NMC Code of Conduct.

  • Record all consultations and treatment accurately in the patient record system.

  • Complete required documentation for patient registration, audits, and statistical reporting.

  • Attend meetings and contribute to practice discussions and development plans.

  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient, staff, and organisational information.

Leadership and Teamwork
  • Support the clinical governance agenda and contribute to service development.

  • Identify improvements in clinical practice based on evidence and experience.

  • Build effective working relationships with colleagues and partner agencies.
