Job summary

Southgates and The Woottons Surgeries are based in King's Lynn and it has a long and proud history of excellent patient care.

We are looking for an experienced Practice Nurse to join our friendly and professional team in serving our patients.

The working hours at the surgery to be covered are generally 08:00 to 18:00.

This role is for a permanent contract for around 25 hours per week.

We have two surgeries in King's Lynn and you may be required to work across both of these (Southgates and The Woottons).

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be a registered nurse, ideally with some immunisation experience. Diabetes Experience would also be welcomed.

A team player whom can demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, has the ability to self-motivate, organise and prioritise the workload of the nursing team.

You would be part of a friendly & professional team of around 20 nurses.

The Practice has around 22,000 patients, so it is a busy but enjoyable working environment.

Job responsibilities

Job Title: Practice Nurse

Band: 6a

Purpose of post: Experienced Practice Nurse to assist medical personnel in the care of patients including treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education.

Responsible to: Practice Manager

Accountable to: Practice Manager

Major duties and responsibilities

1. To arrange and supervise programmes of assessment, screening and treatment together with general health education advice:

a) The provision of nursing services for the Practice, including working with doctors and other practice professionals as appropriate.

b) Provide nursing treatments to patients in conjunction with the general practitioners or independently to agreed laid down protocols.

c) To arrange for general and specific health screening to practice patients - subject to agreed protocols - and with referrals to general practitioners as necessary.

d) To arrange for patients to be advised on general health care and minor ailments with onward reference to general practitioners if necessary.

e) To administer childhood/ adult vaccinations in accordance with national standards.

2. Treatment room - supplies and equipment:

a) In conjunction with the senior Practice Nurse, make sure consulting/treatment rooms are fully stocked with equipment and clinical consumables relating to patient care.

b) To clean all medical equipment in an appropriate manner.

3. Pathological specimens and investigatory procedures:

a) To collect pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs, smears, etc. for investigatory procedures requested by the general practitioners.

b) To hold and store all specimens correctly for collection by the laboratory messengers. Ensure they are collected and stored in accordance with laid down clinical procedures. Special regard must be paid to COSSH regulations.

4. Infection Control:

a) To take on the Infection Control champion responsibilities if needed.

b) To perform and participate in Infection Control Audit at both sites.

c) To comply with infection control standards and policies.

5. Professional responsibilities:

To ensure communication between the practice nurses and the rest of the medical centre team by:

a) Ensuring that details of all consultations and presentations by patients are properly recorded on the SystmOne computer system.

b) Complete all necessary health authority and other documentation as required by the practice, such as child vaccine returns

c) To attend and participate in appropriate meetings.

d) To assist the senior Practice Nurse carrying out practice philosophy, strategy, procedures and general policy.

e) To assist fully in the clinical governance procedures of the medical centre to ensure safe practice and a continuous review of quality standards.

f) To participate in the team philosophy of the medical centre.

6. Audit and research:

To participate with the partners and other clinical staff as required in any audit or research projects within the practice.

7. Education and training of practice staff:

a) Participate in the education and training of students of all disciplines.

b) Maintain awareness of current clinical developments and trends by reading and researching current articles to maintain up to date clinical standards.

8. Professional education/development:

a) To take part in the practice annual appraisal scheme and to develop a personal development plan.

b) To review personal training needs at least annually.

c) To attend appropriate courses and continuing education to maintain the above

9. Other

Any other reasonable duties that are appropriate to the post of practice nurse as required by the medical centre.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST
