Job summary

The Paediatric Nursing team work as part of a multi disciplinary team delivering patient care. The team are based across two sites - East Molesey and Thames Ditton, Surrey.

The Paediatric Nursing team are hugely popular in the patient community. They offer specialist support and reassuring care to families. The team were originally set up to relieve winter pressures on secondary care and proved such a success that funding continued and the service expanded.

The team work fairly independently and are supported by the GP team for advice and prescribing. We are looking to either recruit a paediatric nurse or an advanced paediatric nurse who would be able to prescribe.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Team provide a broad range of nursing, assessment and diagnostic care.

The work is varied and includes assessment and treatment for minor illnesses, immunisations and vaccinations, paediatric phlebotomy, wound care, mental health and anxiety care, health and wellbeing education.

About us

We are a GP practice based over two sites. We have approximately 18,000 patients registered with the practice and the patient community is both diverse and complex in needs.

We are a forward thinking GP surgery and work with a GP as consultant model of delivery. We have a multi-disciplinary clinical team which includes GPs, advanced clinical practitioners, paramedics, specialist nurses (paediatric, respiratory and diabetes), pharmacists, first contact practitioners and health care assistants. We offer a broad range of services from our two sites including facilitating a cardiology diagnostic service.

The delivery of our services is divided between acute and long term conditions. We have a specialist adminstrative team who engage and organise treatment and assessment for patients with long term conditions including learning disability, mental health, dementia and conditions affecting the elderly.

We are a training practice and learning and development is central to our ethos.

Job responsibilities

The Paediatric Nurse or Paediatric ANP will have clinical appointments booked for paediatric patients with a broad range of conditions. The majority of appointments are face to face although there are some telephone appointments. The team have responsibility for assessing children from newborn to 18 years old with acute or chronic conditions such as asthma or eczema, planning care and follow up as required with GP support.

The Paediatric Nursing Team are supported by a team of HCAs. The paediatric nursing team oversee the work of the HCAs when they are engaged with paediatric work. The GP team are on hand to support the work of the Paediatric Nursing Team.

Clinical duties include:

Venepuncture of paediatric patients.

Vaccination and immunisation.

Removal of sutures/clips.

Urine dip analysis (if HCA not available).

Give advice on diet, health promotion, etc. Following guidance in making every contact count.

Child immunisations.

Ear care.

Assist GP with audits.

Check tetanus status and administer and record vaccine if patient unsure that adequate doses have been given.

To help with the first aid management of emergencies.

To liaise with other health care professionals regarding the care of patients (including safeguarding management).

Check stock and order when necessary.

  • We are looking for either a qualified paediatric nurse or a qualified paediatric nurse practitioner. The required qualifications are as follows (as appropriate):
  • RCN Accredited Nurse Practitioner
  • Current Paediatric NMC Registration
  • Evidence of recent CPD
  • Prescribing Qualification
  • You must have minimum 3 years post registration experience.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of having worked in general practice/primary care.
  • EMIS knowledge.
  • Ability to be able to work autonomously.
