Job summary

The Clinical Lead GP plays a pivotal role in shaping, leading, and delivering high-quality clinical care within general practice. This position combines frontline clinical work with strategic leadership, ensuring the practice maintains excellence in patient outcomes, safety, and service innovation.

As a senior member of the multidisciplinary team, the Clinical Lead GP provides oversight, mentorship, and guidance to colleagues, including salaried GPs, nurses, and allied health professionals. They act as a key link between the practice, the Primary Care Network (PCN), local ICB, and community services, contributing to integrated care and new models of delivery.

The role involves:

  • Clinical Leadership: Driving best practice, governance, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Strategic Input: Supporting the Practice Manager and Partners in planning, workforce development, and implementation of health priorities.

  • Mentorship & Education: Providing supervision and professional development for clinicians and trainees.

  • Innovation & Improvement: Leading audits, reviewing policies, and enhancing patient experience and efficiency.

  • Representation: Acting as a clinical representative in PCN meetings, multidisciplinary forums, and local collaborations.

1.Clinical Leadership:Provide clinical leadership within the practice, ensuring high-quality patient care and adherence to clinical guidelinessupported by the delivery of several clinical meetings.

Activity:In collaboration andsupportedbyclinicalpartnersand administrative teams,help Chair practice and PCN MDT meetings; Practice Clinical Meeting (frequency dependent on site),practice Complex Care ICM MDT (monthly), practice palliative care MDT (quarterly), practice Safeguarding MDT (quarterly), PCN Proactive Care MDT (monthly) and PCN High Intensity User MDT (monthly). Ensure consistency of minute taking of meetings,sign off meeting minutesandmaintainaction log where appropriate.Help ensure dissemination of best practice (egNICE updates,drug safety alerts, complaints, deaths, new cancers, safeguardingcasesandNHSE SOPs)as standing agenda itemsthrough schedule of clinicalmeetings. Meet with other clinical leads across sites toenable peer support and ensure consistency of best practice across sites. Report through theSite-specific Partner into the Medical Director andExecutive Board.

2.Clinical Governance:Oversee clinical governance activities, including monitoring and improving clinical standards, patient safety, and the quality of care provided. Provide support and leadership with CQC inspections.

Activity:Being the namedSafeguardingLead of thePractice, ensuredeliveryand adherence with organisationwideSafeguardingpolicy reporting into Organisational Safeguarding Lead as required for escalations. Working alongside SafeguardingAdministrativelead,ensuretimelycorrespondencewith externalstakeholdersand disseminationoflearningwith widerclinicalteams.SupportSenior Management Teamand Lead Pharmacistin reportinginto Executive Boardon key clinical KPIs and performance activity (e.g. delivery of QOF as well as local LESs). Support Lead Pharmacist with undertakingof 2cyclic audits to support CQC compliance requirements. Undertakequarterlyrecord keepingaudits based on NHSE guidance of GPs and LocumGPsand feedback areas of concern or improvement to Sie Partner.3.Team Management:Manage and support clinical staff,especiallyGPsbut also other Allied Health Professionals and learnersto ensure efficient and effective practice operations.
