Job summary

St James Medical Practice is excited to announce that we are recruiting a Prescription Clerk to join our friendly team. The prescription clerk provides support to our GPs and allied health professionals in the receipt and preparation of repeat prescriptions for our patient list of over 18,000 patients.

Please note - Interviews will be scheduled to occur on Friday 9th Jan 2026.

Main duties of the job

Duties will include coordinating and preparing repeat prescriptions for our patients, data entry onto patient records. Electronic & paper issuing of medication as well as patient and pharmacy liaison. The tasks and responsibilities to be undertaken may vary dependent on current and evolving practice workload and staffing levels.

  • Work with our GP's to provide a responsive repeat prescription service.
  • Deliver the technical and physical aspects of prescription preparations to ensure safe prescribing of medicines.
  • Deliver an efficient prescription service and ensure service target are met and errors minimised.
  • Comply with legal and professional requirements and accepted guidance with safe systems of work for re-authorising repeat prescriptions.
  • Liaise with Pharmacies on the supply of prescribed medicines, alerting clinicians on any supply issues and forwarding information on alternatives available.
  • Expedite urgent prescriptions to maintain a safe and responsive service to patients.
  • Respond to enquiries from patients, carers, allied health professionals and secondary care in a courteous timely and efficient manner by telephone, letter, email or face to face and maintain precise records of communications.
  • Provide an efficient administration service as part of a team to ensure the smooth running of the prescription service.
  • Ensure patient information is kept up to date, secure and confidential. Maintaining accurate patient data in accordance with reporting requirements.
  • Bring any queries to the attention of the relevant prescriber or duty doctor, including over usage and review dates not adhered to.
  • On the GP's instruction inactivate medicines that have never been used or have not been issued for a specified time, maintaining accurate and up to date medical data.
  • Liaise and build good relationships with internal and external pharmacy services as necessary to resolve queries and enable the prescription service.
  • Escalate any problems to your line manager that you may need support with.
  • Provide cover for other members of your team during periods of sickness or annual leave, remaining flexible and responsive to the needs of the business.
  • Undertake training as required to support a safe and efficient service.
