Job Title: Registered Nurse (or Operating Department Practitioner) Band 5

Job Summary:

To assist in the provision of quality planned care for patients during their post and peri- operative phase of care across a range of local anaesthetic surgical specialties. Provide professional nursing support to the Dermatology service all of which must be within the limits of training and assessed competencies.

Provide and maintain the highest standard of patient centred nursing care as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the healthcare team.

Effective, professional communication with relevant consultants, GPwSIs/GPWERs, theatre staff, Healthcare and administration teams and enhancement of communication between Doctor and patient.

Job Responsibilities

Assemble, check and prepare the appropriate surgical equipment, instruments, and consumables for a wide range of operative procedures.

Monitoring of the patient.

To undertake the role of the advanced scrub practitioner, first assistant to the surgeon, acting within the defined policy.

When training successfully completed undertake suturing, small biopsies and curettes using local anaesthetic.

Enable the HCA team to work effectively to provide a high quality patient centred service and to work effectively with other agencies.

Assist with the training and induction of new staff.

Prepare the appropriate area prior to the start of a list; undertaking the appropriate checks to ensure the equipment is used safely.

Be responsible for ensuring rooms are stocked, clean and tidy to the required standards.

Ensure the daily checklist for the medical fridge, theatre and clinic rooms is completed, highlighting any issues to the management team.

Ensure stock is rotated and orders requested on a monthly basis.

Collect the patients from the reception area using your first name and job title.

Conducting mandatory patient checks including informed consent, patients identity and operative site against the supporting documentation, handing over the care of the patient to the Theatre Lead or Dermatology Doctor.

Ensure patient data is correctly entered onto the Emis system in a timely and accurate manner.

Accompany the patient back to the recovery area, depending upon the assessment undertaken by the Registered Practitioner with regards to the patients postoperative condition.

Assist in the safe transfer and positioning of the patient.

Undertake recovery post operatively, clearly explaining the aftercare procedures.

In the interests of patient and staff safety, be able to raise concerns and stop the line when needed.

Clean the appropriate area and equipment between and after the operating list/clinic.

Assist in the appropriate and safe removal of clinical waste from the department.

Be aware of and comply with all infection prevention and control policies and ensure best practice is maintained to ensure low infection rates.

Respect the patients dignity, privacy, wishes and beliefs.

Assist in the transfer and movement of clinical material and equipment.

Ensure any accidents, incidents or complaints are fully documented and that the appropriate manager is informed.

Attend training sessions and courses as required; complete mandatory training and actively participate in the annual appraisal process.

Participate in the annual staff survey and quarterly team meetings.

Maintain professional registration at all times in line with the regulators requirements; successfully complete revalidation.

Contribute to quality improvement and audits as required.

Assist the senior management team in ensuring CMS contractual requirements are met, and the service is delivered within budget.

Assist in CMS maintaining its CQC registration where required.

Ensure CMS policies, procedures SOPs and legislation are adhered to.

Ensure your work, conduct and behaviour are in line with the CMS ethos and model these to patients and staff at all times.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Registered Nurse or ODP with active registration.

Desirable

• Experience of working in theatres.
• Additional relevant qualifications theatre nurse or practitioner cert/course.
• Experience of working in a Dermatology service
• Mentorship course or teaching qualification

Experience

Essential

• Nurse or ODP in the NHS or general nursing within the NHS or equivalent.
• Evidence of ongoing CPD
• Knowledge of patient care/needs in the peri-op environment
• Understanding of clinical governance and undertaking of audits or projects

Desirable

• Experience in managing staff including appraisals, performance, absence, selection and recruitment.
• Development of clinical protocols

• Able to travel and work across CMS sites in Cumbria.
