Job summary

Due to staff changes we are looking for a hardworking and enthusiastic General Practice Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Health Care Assistant and administrator in a GP Practice or similar community setting. We offer a stable working pattern, usually over Monday to Friday.

We are looking for cover across our clinical and administration team, this will be a new and developing role for our practice.

Interviews will be held on 17th July 2025.

Main duties of the job

You will work with an established nursing team of our Lead Nurse / ANP and 3 Prescribing Nurses, a Long Term Conditions Practice Nurse a Treatment Room Nurse, an Assistant Practitioner and 2 Health Care Assistants in our modern purpose-built GP Practice and administration team.

You will enjoy working independently as well as part of a team, have good communication skills, want to learn and adapt with changes in the role and be able to work under pressure.Main duties for the clinical role will include phlebotomy, INRs, health checks for patients prior to Long Term Condition reviews, ECGs, infection prevention and assisting GP led contraceptive and minor surgery clinics.The administration part of the role will include, support with medicine management tasks, workflow of medical information, support with the completion of forms and medical record summarisation.

This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

Salary dependant on skills and experience.

Our practice is located in the market town of Kendal, on the edge of the Lake District. We have a patient list size of around 11,500 patients.

Our friendly and motivated team has 5 GP Partners, 3 salaried GPs and an established Nursing Team who are supported by a friendly and efficient Admin Team. We are active participants in the Kendal Primary Care Network with multiple ARRS roles.

Special requirements of the post

The special requirements of the post regarding skills, knowledge and experience are:

  • Organised, methodical and thorough.
  • Effective keyboard skills and good spelling and a knowledge of medical terminology and of read code systems.
  • An understanding, acceptance and adherence to the need for strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to use your own judgement and resourcefulness, without supervision in a busy environment.

  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.

General Duties include:

Clinical:

Phlebotomy,

ECGS,

Basic observations, such as BP, Pulse, height and weight etc,

Dip test urine samples,

Chaperoning duties,

Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs and Nurses,

Cleaning and re-stocking of clinical rooms,

Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of Minor Operations and Coil clinics,

Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients health and wellbeing,

Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being,

To perform any other tasks, considered appropriate to the role, within the skills of the post holder,

Explain treatment procedures to patients.

Administration:

  • To engage in effective and efficient workflow of information to clinical and non-clinical staff including electronic and paper documents received from hospitals.
  • Maintain medical records by way of entering clinical data onto the computer.
  • Create an electronic summary of new patient records both by paper and electronically.
  • Ensure that daily computer procedures are carried out, e.g. regularly checking emails, inboxes and workflow trays.
  • Provide support to the Medicine Management team to ensure urgent medication changes, stops and alterations are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Be able to liaise with Clinicians, Community Pharmacists, Carers and other NHS Professionals when responding to patient enquiries.
  • Providing support with PMM inboxes and emails.
  • Provide non-clinical support to the Clinical Team.
  • Support with completion of basic forms and core elements of some forms for the GPs to approve and sign, such as insurance forms, mortgage forms, benefits agency forms, Subject Access Requests etc.
  • Support with medical record summarisation.

Attend team meetings and practice learning sessions.

  • Attend to any ad hoc IT issues, for example replacement of toners, printer issues etc
