HCA - Health Care Assistant

Responsible to - Senior HCA and Lead Nurses.

The post holder will join a team of 5 practice nurses and 3 healthcare assistants.

We are looking for a total of around 30 hours/week.

Working hours are within a flexible shift pattern between 8.00am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday. Occasional Saturday working, and some weekday evenings to 8pm are required.

Pay rate offered will be dependent upon prior, relevant experience

Main duties of the job

  • Venepuncture (checking request forms, checking patient ID, checking equipment, drawing blood, labelling bottles, checking venepuncture site)
  • Blood Pressure, height & weight measurements
  • Smoking status checks
  • Urinalysis (& processing of samples)
  • Assisting with contraceptive coil fits
  • Completing NHS Health Checks
  • When required, act as a chaperone for patients
  • Chronic disease management: supporting practice nurses and pharmacists with annual checks for patients with diabetes, hypertension & CHD. Diabetic foot checks
  • Seasonal flu vaccinations
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of patients records and clinically related matters at all times
  • Promoting effective communication and relationships within the team
  • Partaking in clinical supervision
  • Making effective use of the IT system (EMIS Web) by ensuring the consistent and accurate entering of data and use of appropriate coding
  • Contributing to practice/team audit and reviews of service delivery as required
  • Keeping up to date with mandatory training
  • Attending staff meetings and group training as required
  • Assists patients and where appropriate encourages self-care and self-management of self-limiting conditions through health promotion
  • Works within all relevant practice policies and procedural guidelines e.g.: Infection Control and Chaperoning
  • Potential for development with spirometry and wound management

  • Competencies Have a good professional manner and be able to deal with patients and staff professionally even when under pressure. Strong inter-personal and communication skills. Enjoy working flexibly within a team and contributing to the team as a whole. Good IT skills and willing to learn.

  • Qualifications and training Previous training in phlebotomy required. Experience of basic wound care. Experience of some or all of the following are desirable: contraception and sexual health, cervical screening, management of chronic diseases (asthma, COPD, CHD and diabetes.) A commitment to continuing professional development is therefore essential.
  • ExperienceIn a primary care environment is preferable, although all registered HCAs that can demonstrate transferable skills and an interest in general practice are welcome to apply. Also important is the willingness and ability to learn, with training provided, to develop further skills in this area.
  • Organisational fit A good team worker with a positive attitude.
  • Special Requirements To be able to maintain confidentiality. To be able to deal with patients sensitively. Up to date Disclosure and Barring Service assessment.
  • Organisational progression- The practice is committed to staff training and continuous professional development. The successful applicant will be prepared to attend training sessions and to put the learning into practice.
