Job summary

We are seeking a dedicated Phlebotomist to join our friendly team at Verwood Surgery to cover 12 months maternity leave for 22.5 hours per week with the below rota.

Monday 8:30am 1pm

Tuesday 8.30 to 1pm & 2pm 4:15pm

Wednesday 8.30am to 1pm & 2pm 4:15pm

Thursday 8.30am to 1pm

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with patient care including venepuncture, taking vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting with minor procedures.
  • Support the nursing team with the administration of vaccinations and other clinical tasks.
  • Provide health promotion advice and support to patients.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure confidentiality at all times.
  • Assist with the management of clinical supplies and equipment.

We are an exceptionally friendly and supportive practice with high rates of staff retention. We serve around 8000 patients in Verwood and the surrounding areas of Three-Legged Cross, Edmondsham and Woodlands.

The practice team is made up of fivePartners, twoSalaried GPs, fourfantastic practice nurses, Physicians Associate, Phlebotomists, Frailty Team, management team and our admin staff. We are a training practice and regularly have a Registrar.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice HCA guidelines and protocols, the post holder will support the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of quality health and care services.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Phlebotomy services including near patient testing for INR, blood glucose, and cholesterol monitoring
  • Vital signs monitoring- measuring and recording blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and weight, reporting abnormal readings using practice protocols
  • ECGs and other basic diagnostic procedures as trained
  • Chronic disease support- supporting diabetes, COPD, and hypertension clinics
  • Vaccination administration following appropriate training and competency assessment
  • Chaperoning services when requested by clinicians
  • Clinical area management- preparing, maintaining and restocking treatment rooms to national cleanliness standards

Communication and Team Working

  • Professional communication with patients, families, and healthcare colleagues
  • Liaise effectively between clinical and administrative teams
  • Report significant patient issues immediately to appropriate clinician
  • Participate actively in team meetings and practice development

Professional Development

  • Participate in annual individual performance review
  • Complete mandatory training modules annually
  • Take responsibility for own professional development

Health and Safety

  • Comply with all practice health and safety policies
  • Maintain infection control standards at all times
  • Report incidents and near misses appropriately
  • Ensure safe handling and disposal of clinical waste
