Job summary

Purton Surgery is looking for a part time Practice Nurse to join our 5-strong nursing team.

We have 9 GPs, a prescribing Nurse Practitioner, 2 Health Care Assistants, fully supported by a comprehensive administration and reception team to look after our 11,000 patients.

16 - 24 hours per week, salary dependent on experience.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the delivery of practice nursing services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice, the NMC code of conduct and professional boundaries to the patient population. The practice nurse will be responsible for several clinical areas such as infection prevention and control, health promotion, chronic disease management and health prevention, as well as supporting the management team in the reviewing of clinical policy and procedure.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team player who strives to deliver a high standard of care. You will have experience in General Practice Nursing duties, including, treatment room, wound care, cervical cytology, childhood immunisations and managing long-term conditions.

Main Responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities

Wound care management

Assess routine wounds including trauma and post-operative

To support good wound management in complex situations

Treatment room services

To see & manage patients in booked treatment room sessions. To arrange appropriate management and follow-up and liaise with other team members as appropriate.

Patients will be seen for:

Administration of injections

Childhood & travel immunisations

Dressings and wound care

Cervical Screening

Phlebotomy

Usually carried out by the HCA/phlebotomist but, depending on demand or sickness, there will be a need to see patients for venepuncture

To understand own responsibilities and accountability on the delivery of care

To maintain individual professional nursing standards and encourage the same within the rest of the team

To participate in Clinical Governance activities and engage with educational opportunities

To take part as appropriate in professional development and programmes of clinical supervision or mentorship.

To work with other team members to ensure the implementation of the Quality & Outcomes Framework

Service Delivery

To support the smooth operation of the practice nurse team. This will include planning for and providing nursing cover for holidays, study leave and sickness.

To ensure correct use of medical equipment, report problems and ask for training if needed

To take on any responsibilities as delegated by the nursing team leader. These may include but are not limited to;

Checking of the medical bags

Health & Safety tasks

Stock checks

Checking and review of medical equipment in rooms

Ordering and maintaining stocks of drugs and supplies

Other appropriate tasks

The practice places great emphasis on team working and aims to foster good relationships throughout the team. All staff are encouraged to attend regular staff meetings and take part in other activities important to practice life.

The changing nature of primary care means that any year may bring new challenges to take on. This means that the post holder should be prepared, as with all members of the primary care team, to take on appropriate tasks as directed by the practice manager and partners.
