GP Assistant

Job summary

The role of a GP Assistant (GPA) is to work closely with their assigned GPs, performing predominately administrative tasks on the GPs behalf, freeing up GP time. The GPA assists GPs with managing their patient list, communicating with patients about their care and condition. The GPA also liaises with teams within the practice and outside agencies regarding their patients. The GPA is part of a bigger GPA team, ensuring that there is cover for all GPs to benefit from GPA support.

Main duties of the job

  • Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients as requested by the GP or other clinicians
  • Manage the pathology results
  • Manage patients requiring drug monitoring/medication review, ensuring that they have been invited and attended for all relevant checks
  • Managing some areas of QOF/IIF, inviting in patients for their reviews
  • Assisting the GP with communicating with patients, advising of medication changes, providing support for lifestyle advice & signposting to others such as clinical pharmacist.
  • Explaine treatment procedures to patients
  • Monitoring & assisting the GPs
  • Monitoring clinical searches for patients of their own assigned GP, such as but not limited to, drug monitoring searches & highlighting exceptions to the GP
  • Completing basic forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency etc.
  • Working closely with other teams within the practice notably secretarial, workflow and scripts to improve communication/build relationships with patients & problem solve
  • Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies
  • Liaise with care homes where GP has responsibility for a home

There will be instances where the GPA will perform these tasks for other GPs in the practice as well as their own assigned GPs, as part of ensuring adequate cover for leave, sickness, and part time working. There also may be instances where the role is required to cover responsibilities of other teams to maintain service levels.

The postholder will be required to have direct patient contact and will support patient care by accessing and maintaining patient records and files and managing access to medical records. The contact with patients is predominately by telephone, with some face to face contact as needed.

The postholder will have no specific financial, budgetary or contract management responsibilities. All staff at ENMP are required to demonstrate a duty of care with respect to resources issued to them (equipment and supplies) and to maintain a safe and compliant work area.

The postholder is expected to manage own varied workload and will support the planning of assigned GP(s) workload.

Internally the postholder will be required to liaise with the assigned GP(s) and Finance Manager (line manager) and wider internal staff in order to effectively discharge their responsibilities.

The highest standards of confidentiality will be required by the postholder. In addition, the postholder will support the equality, diversity and rights of patients, carers and colleagues, to include:

  • Acting in a way that recognises the importance of peoples rights, interpreting them in a way that is consistent with Practice procedures and policies, and current legislation
