Job summary

Needham Market Country Practice is a GP practice with more than 14,000 patients. Our patients are very important to us and, as a team, we strive to keep patients at the centre of their care acting with compassion and understanding.

We are looking for someone who is qualified to dispense medication within a team of dispensers. The dispenser needs to be compassionate and able to help patients in a calm and courteous manner. The job requires an ability to focus, be self motivated whilst working as a member of the dispensing team and good problem solving skills.

The role is 8 hours on a Friday

Main duties of the job

Duties will include:

Generating prescriptions using SystmOne software

Accurate dispensing and checking of prescriptions

Helping patients with queries and questions in person and on the telephone

Ordering stock and dispensary consumables

The ideal candidate will be friendly and responsible, with good interpersonal skills. The role involves a reasonable amout of computer work so confidence using computers is preferred.

Flexibility to help with ad-hoc cover within the department would be an advantage.

Job responsibilities

Accountability -Dispensary Manager

Brief Description

The post-holder will project a positive and friendly image to dispensary patients and other visitors and deal with queries in a professional, courteous and efficient way.

Assist in the preparation of all aspects of dispensing and assist with stock control, ordering and re-stocking of the dispensary.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

· Checking and dispensing medication as per prescription

· Ensure patients signs prescription and collect charge as required, checking patient exemption statements

· Not to dispense medicines to unauthorised persons, without the doctors consent

· Dispense and record private prescriptions and collect specified charges

· Receive, record and dispense repeat medication requests

· To prepare paperwork and process prescriptions for Tara, Surgery

· Answering telephone calls and passing on messages as appropriate

· Dealing with problems and enquiries

· Inputting information onto the computer

· Ensuring that drugs are received and stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions

· Ensuring that refrigerated items are stored at the appropriate temperature and maintaining the temperature control record/logbook

· Cleaning work surfaces and shelving on a regular basis and ensuring that all dispensary equipment is kept clean and kept in good working order

· Undertaking other reasonable duties within the framework of the post as directed by the Senior Dispenser. Ordering and unpacking drugs and dressings

· Dispensing and checking repeat and acute prescriptions

· Taking prescriptions requests and dealing with queries from other agencies i.e. community nurses and support staff

· Using the computer to keep records up to date

· Checking with GPs or in patient records if concerned about the appropriateness of requests for medication

· Dealing with queries from patients regarding their prescriptions

· Ordering drugs from wholesalers

· Handling controlled drugs and keeping register.

· Handling and balancing prescription money

· Assisting when required to meet targets in relation to dispensing doctors scheme

· Assist in checking stocks

· Providing cover for annual leave/sickness

· To carry out any duties as required

· To work flexibly within the team and to provide cover as necessary

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ Level 2 in Dispensing

Desirable

  • Experience working within a medical or clinical environment
