Job responsibilities
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST
To ensure that:
The Dispensary is kept properly stocked with supplies.
All medicines are prepared and dispensed accurately.
All Dispensary equipment is kept in proper order, including the refrigerator
All drugs and medicines are kept safely.
All the legal requirements applicable to dispensing practice and medicines are properly observed.
The Dispensary is kept clean and tidy at all times.
Specific Tasks:
To dispense medicines/drugs as required by the doctors in the practice.
Not to dispense medicines to unauthorised persons, whoever they may be, without the doctor's consent.
To dispense and record private prescriptions with their payments.
To dispense repeat medicine requests and print current month prescription.
Record prescription charges on bags.
To ensure end of month submissions are endorsed correctly and sent on time to the NHSBSA.
To re-order supplies of medicines and containers.
To check emergency drugs are always in stock and in date.
To check stock balance and CD register with second Dispenser or Dispensary Manager.
Daily monitoring of fridge temperature to maintain cold chain between 2 8 degrees centigrade and monitoring of room temperature to keep below 25 degrees centigrade.
To have face to face consultations with patients for drug use and monitoring (DRUMs under the
Dispensary Services Quality Scheme).
To unpack daily drug deliveries and top up stock.
To check and file invoices.
To sort prescriptions weekly to include endorsement check and prescription charge check.
To dispense medicines into weekly dossett boxes as required.
To arrange for the distribution of medicines to patients residing in outlying villages if required.
To fully observe all legal requirements relevant to dispensing practice including the Health
Authority Regulations.
To monitor review dates and contact patients to see Nurse/Doctor as required.
Ensure that stock is not out-dated before use.
To ensure that the computer, printer and other equipment is maintained in proper order at all
times.
To ensure the most efficient use of the Dispensary.
To ensure the cleanliness of the Dispensary.
To ensure the safety and security of the Dispensary and contents.
To ensure the safety of all who enter the Dispensary.
To carry out searches for the Dispensary Manager and Doctors as requested to implement
changes and recalls.
Special requirements of the Post:
To provide cover for the Dispensers during periods of leave.
To have an ability to use own judgement, resourcefulness and common sense to respond to
patients enquiries and requests.

In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive
information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have
the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately.
In the performance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the post-holder may have
access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other
healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a
business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly
confidential.
Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of
the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies
and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety and security as defined in the practice Health & Safety Policy, to include:
Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines.
Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks.
Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills.
Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards.
Reporting potential risks identified.
