Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Dispenser to join our friendly rural dispensing practice. You will be responsible for the smooth day-to-day running of the dispensary, ensuring safe, efficient, and accurate dispensing of medication to our patients. Working with the lead dispenser to ensure effective financial control of the dispensary is maintained.

Main duties of the job

The Dispenser is responsible for the safe, accurate and efficient supply of medicines. Key duties include preparing, labelling and dispensing prescriptions, including NOMAD trays, while ensuring all items meet legal and professional standards. They maintain up to date knowledge of dosage forms, storage and product use.

The role provides a friendly, professional and confidential service to patients, answering queries about medicines and prescriptions and referring to the wider team where needed. Dispensers also receive, check and store stock, rotate items to minimise waste, monitor expiry dates, maintain accurate stock levels and support ordering processes.

Accurate records are essential, including maintaining dispensing documentation, assisting with controlled drug management and ensuring compliance with SOPs and data protection requirements.

Working closely with colleagues, the Dispenser helps ensure smooth daily operations, supports training and ongoing professional development, and contributes to general housekeeping and organisation in the dispensary.

Our team includes five GP Partners, a mix of clinical and non-clinical staff, and 5 part-time dispensers and 3 prescription clerks who work under the supervision of our Lead Dispenser. Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate dispensing records in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Assist in controlled drug management in line with regulations.
  • Comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and data protection rules.

5. Teamwork & Support

  • Work closely with team members and wider team in the practice to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Participate in training and ongoing professional development.
  • Assist with general housekeeping and organisation within the dispensary.
