Job responsibilities

Principle Clinical Responsibilities:

Meeting patients needs as identified, or where care has been transferred by a GP. This will usually be in surgery, but occasional home visits will also be required.

Assess undifferentiated patients with a range of acute, non-acute and chronic medical conditions.

Take history, make appropriate physical examinations, formulate differential diagnoses, and as appropriate provide definite treatment or make referrals to other members of the primary care team or to secondary care.

Maintain accurate record keeping on our medical record system (EMIS Web).

Administer adult and child immunisations in accordance with national and local protocols.

Offer comprehensive travel health advice for patients prior to travel including malaria prophylaxis, safe sex, food hygiene, sun protection, first aid and emergency medication, health insurance and vaccinations, where competency allows.

Recognise and understand the importance of observing, documenting, and communicating the signs and symptoms of child and adult abuse.

Advise patients on general healthcare and promote self-management where appropriate.

Undertake collection of specimens including intravenous blood samples and swabs etc.

Develop and support the delivery of care plans for chronic diseases as they develop. E.g. Housebound and elderly patients.

Work within all relevant practice policies and procedural guidelines e.g. Infection control, chaperoning and patient group directions. In addition to national NICE and local clinical guidelines.

Professional Responsibilities:

Attend and contribute to relevant internal and external meetings as required including practice clinical meetings, team meetings and any other relevant meetings.

Maintain a personal progress and training plan to keep up to date with current thinking and developments as well as identifying own training deficiencies and attending suitable courses and appropriate.

Promote evidence-based practice through use of the latest research-based guidelines.

Maintain professional registration and work within the latest HCPC Code of Professional Conduct.

Record accurate consultation data in patients records in accordance with HCPC guidance and other standards.

Keep up to date with pertinent health policy and work with the practice team to consider the impact and strategies for implementation.

Work collaboratively with colleagues both internally and externally.

Demonstrate leadership.

Pro-actively promote the role of a primary care paramedic within the practice and with the public.

Contribute to practice audit/research activity as required.

Promote effective communication, relationships and team working within the practice.

Partake in clinical supervision for own development purposes.

Personal Responsibilities:

To ensure an up-to-date knowledge of practice policy and procedures relating to this post.

To attend relevant training courses as requested by the management team.

Help the practice develop in a cost-effective manner, monitoring and using resources appropriately e.g. stock control of dressings, vaccinations.

To ensure knowledge of the contents of the Staff Handbook.

Facilitate the use of up-to-date information technology to collate accurate and timely information as and when required by the practice.

Make recommendations and initiates raising of practice standards and service delivery.

To observe confidentiality at all times.

To present and conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.

To attend for an IDPR with the Practice Manager on an annual basis.

To ensure an up-to-date knowledge of data protection issues relating to the post.

To report and record all accidents in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Experience

Essential

• Ability to work core hours
• Flexibility for cover
• Full Driving license and car/transport

Qualifications

Essential

• Registered Paramedic - A minimum of 3 years experience as a Paramedic
• Willingness to learn and acquire new skills
• Evidence of appropriate knowledge base
• Evidence of appropriate continuing professional development activity Demonstrate an understanding of audit
• Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication
• Time management
• Proven ability to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of their own clinical practice
• Membership of a professional body

Desirable

• Prior experience working in a primary care environment
• Excellent computer skills
• Awareness of the national service framework guidelines
• Understanding of health and safety issues
• To be an independent prescriber or to be open to training to achieve this qualification
• Knowledge of patient group directives and associated policy
• Involvement in implementing and using protocols and clinical guidelines
• Minor illness qualification
