Job summary

The Phlebotomists core responsibilities include obtaining patient consent for blood sample collection, performing venepuncture according to protocols, and maintaining accurate patient records in the clinical IT system. They are also responsible for proper labelling, packaging, and storing of samples, resolving discrepancies in the specimen log, and ensuring timely sample submission to the lab. Effective communication with NHS Trust laboratory staff and collaboration with the nursing team are essential. Additionally, the Phlebotomist may participate in audits, local initiatives to improve service delivery, shared learning within the practice, and complete opening and closing duties according to the duty rota.

Main duties of the job

Working under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the Phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis.

Job responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities:

The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample.

b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols.

c. Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system.

d. The correct labelling, packaging, and storing of samples.

e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies.

f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner.

g. Maintaining an effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff.

h. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters.

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to:

a. Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead.

b. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.

c. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice.

d. Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota.
