The Lay Secretary plays a key role in the administration, governance and strategic operations of the LMC. They provide support to the committee, facilitate effective communication between members and external stakeholders and ensure compliance with relevant policies and regulations. Additionally, they oversee IT systems, manage digital platforms and maintain the LMC website.
Main duties of the job
Wakefield LMC has an exciting opportunity for a Lay Secretary due to the retirement of the current post holder. This is a part-time role of 20 hours over 5 days (hours negotiable). Attendance at one evening meeting per month is required. Partial home working will be considered. Office base is Crofton Health Centre, Wakefield.
This key role involves providing vital support to the committee, ensuring smooth administration, governance and strategic operations. The Lay Secretary will facilitate effective communication between members and external stakeholders while ensuring compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
We are looking for a highly organised and proactive individual with strong administrative skills, excellent communication abilities and a good understanding of IT systems. The ideal candidate will also have experience managing websites, handling digital communications and supporting governance processes.

About us
Wakefield LMC provides support and contractual advice to all the practices in the Wakefield and Pontefract area.
The committee is elected and representative of local GPs, with members who are sessional GPs, GP principals and work under GMS and PMS contracts. We also have a GP trainee representative.
Wakefield LMC also supplies pastoral support to GPs.
We can provide free, confidential support relating to individual performance processes or complaints, contractual or partnership issues or signposting to more formal routes of support such as the GP Health service.

1. Committee Administration & Governance
- Organise and attend LMC meetings, including preparing agendas, minutes and action points
- Ensure compliance with LMC governance frameworks and statutory requirements
- Maintain accurate records of committee decisions, correspondence and policies
- Support the election process for LMC members and officers
- Implement and manage digital tools for efficient committee operations, such as online document storage and communication platforms.
2. IT, Website Management & Digital Communication
- Manage and update the LMC website.
- Oversee email systems, mailing lists and online communication tools.
- Ensure compliance with GDPR and IT security best practices.
3. Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the first point of contact for LMC members, GPs and external stakeholders.
- Liaise with NHS bodies, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and other healthcare organisations.
- Distribute newsletters, reports and policy updates to LMC members.
- Manage digital communications, including social media and email campaigns
- Use IT systems to facilitate remote meetings, webinars and online forums.
4. Policy & Advisory Support
Provide administrative and strategic support to the LMC in representing local GPs.
5. Financial & Office Management
- Oversee the LMCs budget, invoices and financial reporting in collaboration with the Medical Secretary
- Administer the LMC accounts, statutory and voluntary levy and communicate with payroll company.
- Administer pensions in line with current legislation.
- Ensure compliance with data protection (GDPR) and confidentiality regulations.
- Manage office administration, including document control and correspondence.
- Use financial software or spreadsheets to track expenses and manage budgets.
6.Safety, Health, Environment and Fire (SHEF)
All personnel are to comply with the:
- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- Environmental Protection Act 1990
- Environment Act 1995
- Fire Precautions (workplace) Regulations 1999
- Other statutory legislation which may be brought to the post holders notice.
