Job summary

The phlebotomist is part of the nursing team responsible for ensuring that the practice provides an optimum service of care to the practice population for Montpelier Health Centre.

The phlebotomist serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, preforming screening procedures and promoting health.

Main duties of the job

The main duties and responsibilities are as follows.

1. Establish and maintain rapport with patients and help to alleviate anxieties regarding their procedures

2. Identify the appropriate blood tests required either requested by the GP, nurse or secondary care provider; or if the patient presents for monitoring of their chronic disease before their clinic appointment

3. Accurately label specimens with the patients details

4. Maintain the integrity of samples collected by processing immediately, either preparing for collection or appropriate storage

5. Record all consultations and procedures fully in computer notes and communicate with other disciplines as necessary

6. Following appropriate training, carry out Blood Pressure checks as requested by the nurse or GP, understanding normal parameters and identifying when to refer on as per MHC BP protocol

7. Be prepared for the patient to potentially become unwell during a procedure and assist the nurses in emergency situations

8. Maintain pathology stock stores

9. Working with the HCAs, ensure consumables ordering is monitored and actioned in a timely way

10. Provide assistance to all Clinicians with ensuring their consultation rooms / areas are stocked appropriately

11. Update knowledge and skills by participating in educational opportunities
