Job summary

Due to an increase in the demand for Phlebotomy appointments the exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Nursing Team. The team currently consists of 4 Practice Nurses, 1 Nurse Associate and 2 Health Care Assistants. We are looking for an enthusiastic and caring Phlebotomist to further enhance the team and join our friendly GP Practice. A team player with good clinical skills and an interest in further training and personal development are vital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work under direct supervision of the practice nurse team and will be accountable to the Management Team and Partners, following specific practice guidelines and protocols at all times. The post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients that have been booked directly into their clinical appointments.

Fernbank Surgery is a busy practice which is made up of a team of 5 very versatile GP partners, who are supported by a host of salaried GPs, ANPs, Clinical Pharmacists, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants, a management team and a pillar of administration and reception staff members. We are a close knit team that is able to work together efficiently and effectively to ensure that our patients receive an exemplary level of care and service from all that are part of team Fernbank.

Primary Responsibilities.

a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of blood sample

b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

c. Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system

d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples

e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies

f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner

g. Maintaining an effective liaison with the NHS trust laboratory staff

h. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters.

a. Participate in practice audits as directed by a member of the senior team

b. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery with patient care
