An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our multi-disciplinary PCN Team due to the changes in the ARRS Scheme, we are looking to expand our team by seeking to employ a qualified Phlebotomist to work alongside our practices and PCN staff.

Our PCN staff currently includes Clinical Pharmacists, Social Prescribers, Health & Wellbeing Coach, Mental Health Practitioner, Paramedics, First Contact Physiotherapist, GPAs, Pharmacist Technicians, PCN Manager/Digital & Transformation Lead and a Care Home Team.

The successful applicants will work alongside the PCN and practice teams to support healthcare professionals, patients, and carers.

Other associated PCN sites (for example Care Homes and Home Visits)

Main duties of the job

To provide an efficient service to all patients and the clinical team ensuring that the work allocated to you is regularly prioritised and dealt within deadlines set. Confidentiality and adherence to GDPR should be always maintained.

You will be a member of our Primary Care team carrying out the taking of blood from patients at the practice under clinical supervision of our clinical team, following evidence-based national and local clinical governance principals.

GP practices have been working together in our area for years and formed BridgedalePrimary Care Network (PCN).Bridegale Primary Care Network is made up of GP registered patient lists for Roslea Surgery, Riverside Medical Centre and the Ryan Medical Centre. We serve a community of around 30,000 people. We are small enough to provide the personal care valued by our people and large enough to have impact and economies of scale through better collaboration.

As a Primary Care Network we are working hard to deliver on the national NHS England network contract that commenced in July 2019 and continues to March 2024.

This includes the following areas of focus:

enhancing health in care homes

early diagnosis of cancer

tackling neighbourhood inequalities

social prescribing reviews

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.
  • To assess patients presenting for blood tests as per the indications and contra-indications for the practice of venepuncture.
  • To take blood samples from patients, exercising care and attention
  • Collection of samples(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers.
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity.
  • Checking patient identification against the clinical team request and confirming with patient whenever possible
  • Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure
  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff.
  • Notifying the clinical team of any significant patient issues
  • Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team
  • To deal with patients, their relatives, and other staff in a courteous and sympathetic manner, in person and by telephone.
  • To undertake duties using established work systems and new systems as introduced, and to undergo training in their correct use.
  • Respond appropriately to patients who are nervous or have adverse reactions (e.g. fainting)
  • Maintain clean and hygienic work areas in line with infection prevention procedures.

In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 all employees have a duty to take reasonable care to avoid injury to themselves and to others affected by their work activities.

The post-holder will implement the full range of promotion and management of their own and others health, safety and security as defined in the Practices and PCN health & safety policy, the practices health & safety manual, and the practices infection control policy and published procedures. This will include (but will not be limited to):

Ensuring job holders across the practice adhere to their individual responsibilities for infection control and health and safety, using a system of observation, audit and check, hazard identification, questioning, reporting and risk management.

Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of health and safety and infection control (statutory and best practice guidelines).

All staff must comply with infection control policies and guidance, attend relevant updates and report issues of concern to their immediate line manager (if no action or explanation received, then it is the individuals responsibility to escalate their concerns to the Practice Manager).

Using personal security systems within the workplace, according to practice guidelines

Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks across the business.

Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards, and initiating remedial / corrective action where needed

  • Able to work to NVQ Level 2 standard or have equivalent experience.
  • Good customer care skills
  • Able to develop knowledge of medical terminology and Biomedical investigations.
  • Basic IT skills
  • Experience in dealing with patients aged 16+
  • Experience supporting infection control procedures.
  • Phlebotomy trained using a variety of approved equipment, e.g. butterfly needles and vacutainer.
  • Able to work under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Previous phlebotomy experience is required and ideally you will have undertaken a recognised training course
