Job summary

The Lead Practice Nurse is a senior clinical leader within the GP practice, responsible for overseeing the nursing team and ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based care. This role combines hands-on clinical work with team leadership, service development, and strategic input into practice operations.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

  • Deliver high-quality nursing care including:
    • Chronic disease management (Inc Diabetes Management and insulin initiation)
    • Cervical cytology and womens health clinics
    • Childhood and adult immunisations
    • Travel health advice and vaccinations
    • Wound care
    • Contraceptive services (e.g. pill checks, injections)
  • Coordinate administration of under Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and within scope of practice
  • Provide health promotion and lifestyle advice (e.g. smoking cessation, weight management)
  • Support patients in managing long-term conditions and medication adherence
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records using appropriate coding

Team Leadership & Management

  • Line manage practice nurses, HCAs, and phlebotomists
    • Conduct appraisals and assist with planning leave
    • Lead recruitment, induction, and training of new nursing staff
    • Organise and lead regular nursing team meetings
    • Delegate clinical responsibilities safely and appropriately
    • Support staff with mandatory training and CPD requirements

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced clinical leader to oversee the delivery of high-quality nursing services within our practice. The role involves providing contraceptive care (including pill checks and injections), coordinating treatments under Patient Group Directions (PGDs), and offering health promotion advice on lifestyle. The postholder will support patients with long-term conditions specialising in diabetes management and medication adherence, while maintaining accurate clinical records. As a team leader, they will manage practice nurses, healthcare assistants, and phlebotomistsconducting appraisals, planning leave, leading recruitment and induction, and facilitating regular team meetings. They will ensure safe delegation of clinical duties and support staff with mandatory training and CPD. Acting as the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Lead, they will conduct audits, deliver training, and ensure compliance with clinical standards and CQC requirements.
