Job summary
The Lead Practice Nurse is a senior clinical leader within
the GP practice, responsible for overseeing the nursing team and ensuring the
delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based care. This role combines
hands-on clinical work with team leadership, service development, and strategic
input into practice operations.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Duties
- Deliver high-quality nursing care including:
- Chronic disease management (Inc Diabetes Management and insulin initiation)
- Cervical cytology and womens health clinics
- Childhood and adult immunisations
- Travel health advice and vaccinations
- Wound care
- Contraceptive services (e.g. pill checks, injections)
- Coordinate administration of under Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and within scope of practice
- Provide health promotion and lifestyle advice (e.g. smoking cessation, weight management)
- Support patients in managing long-term conditions and medication adherence
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical records using appropriate coding
Team Leadership & Management

- Line manage practice nurses, HCAs, and phlebotomists
- Conduct appraisals and assist with planning leave
- Lead recruitment, induction, and training of new nursing staff
- Organise and lead regular nursing team meetings
- Delegate clinical responsibilities safely and appropriately
- Support staff with mandatory training and CPD requirements
