Job summary

Central Surgery are looking for a Dispensary Apprentice to join our friendly team.

The apprenticeship will take approximately 15 months to complete.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will learn a a wide range of dispensary duties, working alongside our existing team of dispensers. Duties can include but are not limited to greeting patients at the dispensary window, answering phone calls and dealing with patient enquiries. Picking, dispensing and handing out medication to patients, following our practice protocol. Processing tasks for prescriptions requests on the clinical system (SystmOne).

About us

Central Surgery is based in Barton, with a second site in Goxhill. Our large team work at both sites providing primary care services to over 17000 patients. We have 5 GP Partners and 3 salaried GP's, supported by a team of advanced practitioners, nurses and other allied professionals. Along with our admin and receptionist teams we pride ourselves on being a friendly, supportive workplace.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Welcome patients at the Dispensary window, dealing with queries and prescription requests in an efficient manner.

Assemble prescriptions ensuring all items are dispensed with accuracy.

Ensure controlled drugs are dispensed, stored and recorded in line with the regulations for their schedule.

Dispense weekly dosette trays for patients with additional needs.

Hand out medication to Dispensing patients and ensure prescriptions are signed and endorsed. Taking payments for prescription charges in accordance with dispensary protocols.

Prepare prescriptions ready for home delivery.

Answer the dispensary phone, where patients can request repeat medication and ask for medication advice. Sending tasks to the dispensary team members or practice clinicians as appropriate.

Act on any SystmOne tasks which are sent to the dispensary and phone patients when asked with information or advice from a clinician.

Order and process deliveries of medication, dressings and appliances appropriate to the needs of the dispensary with the objective of ensuring continuity of supply for patients and minimising wastage.

Ensure that drugs are received and stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.

Ensure safe disposal of all returned medication following the dispensary protocol.

Maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment using appropriate infection control procedures and ensuring full compliance of health and safety protocols within the dispensary.

Regular date checking of dispensary stock.

Monitor fridge temperatures as needed, maintaining the record log.

Maintaining full and accurate records of all dispensing transactions.

Undertaking other reasonable duties within the framework of the post as directed by the Dispensary Manager
