Job summary

We are looking for a Health Care Assistant to join our existing and experienced nursing team. Ideally full time but part time will be considered for the right applicant(s).You will have an assigned mentor for support and training at all times to enable you to progress in your role.

This will be an ideal position for an experienced HCA wishing to develop their career further, or for the right person a new career start role for which full support will be given.

Main duties of the job

Your will be part of our existing nursing team and will complete Blood Tests, Blood Pressures, NHS Health Checks, ECG's, dressings and other aspects of clinical work that will be relevant for the role. Please see full attached job description. If you are not completely experienced in all of these areas we will provide training for the right applicant.

About us

We are a large, well organised practice with a patient list size of approx. 12500 patients.

We have a nursing team consisting of a Nurse Manager, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Nurse associates and Trainee Nurse Associates. All are involved in training and support.

We have a large supportive team of 9 GPs, along with our reception and admin teams.

We are a training practice which means we are very experienced in supporting the right candidates to excel in their role. This also means that education and training is very important to us.

The position is based in Bridge Road Surgery, and we are in the early discussions to have a new purpose built practice.

Job description

Job responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES OF THE POSTCLINICAL CARE

  1. Work alongside the Health Care Professionals in the provision of patient care and in accordance with Practice protocols and procedures
  2. Undertake and record the following
    1. Measurements of height and weight
    2. Urinanalysis
    3. Measurement of blood pressure
    4. Recording of ECGs
    5. Alcohol and smoking histories
    6. Venepuncture
    7. Drug allergy history

3. Undertake new patient checks

4. Undertake spirometry tests with or without reversibility as instructed by the Clinician ordering the test.

5. Fit & instruct patients with 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor. Remove the equipment & download the data into the patients records.

6. Undertake NHS Health Checks in accordance with the protocol. Maintain cholesterol measuring equipment, order stock of consumables. Conduct monthly quality control check, communicate data with control centre.

  1. Document findings in patients computer records and report any abnormal findings or changes in patients observations
  2. Assist Health Care Professionals in emergency management of patients and be confident in basic resuscitation techniques
  3. Conducting annual/routine appointments according to protocol. Accurate recording of findings & reporting abnormalities to appropriate clinician.
  4. Undertake minor dressings under the direction of practice nurses.
  5. Undertake ear assessment & advise the patient accordingly as per protocol.
  6. Be aware of when to refer the patient to a Doctor or Nurse and enable patients to access appropriate professionals or clinics within the Practice
  7. Act as a chaperone
  8. Appreciate the principles of health living and provide relevant health promotion information literature for patients
  9. Instruct patients in appropriate techniques or tasks
  10. Be fully aware of the limitations on medical advice that may be given within the remit of the role
  11. Document and report all clinical incidents or near misses through the recognised procedure so that they may be addressed through the Significant Event Audit
  12. Assist Doctors and support the patients during minor operations
  13. Assist Doctors w & support patients during insertion of IUCD & Implants.
  14. Administer Seasonal flu & Pneumococcal vaccination in accordance with protocol & Patient Specific Direction.
  15. Administer Intramuscular Vitamin B12 in accordance with protocol & as instructed by GP in form of a prescription.
  16. Assist in Research studies as directed (requires GCP training)
  17. Participate in the running of the Phlebotomy Service as Practice protocol.

NON-CLINICAL

  1. Work effectively in a team and interact with patients and colleagues in a professional manner
  2. Ensure that the requisitioning, storage, rotation and disposal of stock items, including medicines, are managed to guarantee supply, minimise waste and comply with the statutory requirements
  3. Ensure that the Health Care Professionals rooms are kept stocked at all times, including emergency equipment
  4. Ensure that clinical equipment is maintained efficiently and periodic servicing is undertaken
  5. Ensure that clinical areas are clean and tidy and infection control procedures are followed
  6. Contribute new ideas to improve patient care
  7. Maintain accurate records, utilising IM&T where appropriate, ensuring that the Nurse Manager or Senior Nurse on duty is advised of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks
  8. Maintain set standards of organisation in Treatment Rooms and take appropriate action if standards are not being met
  9. Recognise potential areas of conflict, preventing where possible, and reporting to senior members of staff if unable to resolve
  10. Assist with administrative duties as requested, including call and recall systems
  11. Attend Surgery training & meetings as required.
