Job Summary
Perform venipunture to obtain blood samples under
supervision of the qualified Nursing Team and in accordance with specific
practice guidelines and protocols. The Phlebotomist will work collaboratively
with the wider general practice team to meet the needs of patients.
Duties&
Responsibilities
- Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed
as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample
- Carry out home vists for patients who are needing blood tests twice weekly
- Communicate effectively with other team members
- Collection of sample(s)s of blood in accordance with
training and procedures
- Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
- Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm
patient identity
- Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in
accordance with practice procedure
- Ensuring that samples are ready for collection in a
timely fashion.
- Adhere to local guidelines on the safe handling of sharps
and sharp bins.
- Ensure blood bottles, vacutainers and needles are all in
date.
- Ensure clinical areas are left in a safe and clean
manner.
- Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member
of staff
- Notifying the GP/nurse of any significant patient issues
- Keep up to date with new guidelines connected to
venepuncture as required.
- Performing Blood pressure and weight checks on patients
when required for purposes on QOF and Chronic Disease Management.
- Take responsibility for own development all learning and
performance, including participating in supervision and annual appraisal
- Undertake all mandatory training
- Work with management on any new training requirements
- To recognise and understand the roles and
responsibilities of individuals working in the primary health care team
- Carry out general

6. reporting and treatment of sharps injuries
7. dealing with blood and body fluid spillages

resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate
Awareness of the health and safety policies and procedures
within the workplace, including fire procedures
Be able to identify the risks to health of microbiological

and printing both forms and labels
Ensuring samples are accurately labelled and dispatched
for transportation the laboratories in a timely manner
Restocking and ordering of laboratory supplies
Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation
by the pathology laboratories
Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before,
during and after patient care interventions
Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, and
how it can be promoted
Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and
groups within own competence

Record information and activities undertaken with patients
and carers in an accurate and timely fashion using manual or computer systems
as appropriate
