General Practice Assistant (GPA)

Job summary

The GPA role is a 9-month contract, but we are hopeful this could lead to a further extension. The contract is twenty hours per week, Monday Tuesday Thursday, and Friday 09:30 -14:30, we are also open to other working hours for the correct applicant.

The GPA will support the GP(s) smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration and clinical tasks on behalf of the GP freeing up their time to focus on the patient.

Main duties of the job

The post is a role which has been created to assist the GP,s at the surgery and covers both office administration including document management, scanning, coding, dealing with tasks ,communicating and delivering excellent patient care, call and recall invitations and monitoring as well as other health care duties .

Experience and knowledge of working within a clinical setting would advantageous.

Sunniside Surgery is a small practice with a patient list of around 3700. We are situated on the main street in Sunniside and pride ourselves in excellent patient care and close community links.

We have a dedicated and longstanding team of fifteen which includes two Partners two salaried GPs, a nursing team of three and a friendly administration support team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.

Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes

Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients

Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.

Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs & phlebotomy

Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc

Explaining treatment procedures to patients.

Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g. getting an on call

doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the

GP can continue with their consultation(s).

Support the GP with immunisations/wound care.
