DIRECTORATE OF PERIOPERATIVE & CRITICAL CARE

LOCUM CONSULTANT IN ANAESTHESIA (with specialist interest in Intensive Care Medicine)

We are delighted to offer the opportunity for a highly motivated and ambitious anaesthetist with specialist interest in Intensive Care Medicine, to join our well integrated peri-operative team at Freeman Hospital. The post has arisen to cover maternity leave for a period of between to 6-12 months. This is a dual role post to work in the directorate delivering service for 20 operating theatres, 2 recovery units, a 4 bedded post anaesthetic care unit and a 22 bed integrated critical care unit (ICCU). The unit provides intensive care for patients admitted following complex major surgery (both elective and emergency) and supports the needs of the regional haematological/ haem-oncological (including bone marrow and stem cell transplant), renal, hepatological and respiratory medical services. The surgical specialties include major vascular, colorectal, hepatobiliary, and intra-abdominal transplant surgery (liver, pancreas and kidney), urology, orthopaedics and ENT (including radical neck/max-fax/plastics resections & Robotic trans-oral surgery).

The successful applicant will be joining a critical care team of 11 consultant intensivists. The job plan will be approximately 50% intensive care and 50% anaesthesia, participating on the out of hours critical care on call rota. Candidates must have current experience in general surgical and medical critical care and extensive experience in anaesthesia for major surgery patients and the critical care management of bone marrow and stem cell transplant patients.

Based in Newcastle you will be part of a dynamic tertiary referral centre that has recently expanded to provide services to the new Institute of Transplantation, which offers 4 operating theatres in addition to the established 15 theatre suite and the new 22 bed critical care unit and anaesthetic department. We are an internationally acclaimed acute service with a clear commitment to patient safety and high quality integrated patient care.

DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION:

The directorate specialises in complex major surgery including Hepatobiliary and intra-abdominal transplant surgery (liver, pancreas, kidney & kidney /pancreas transplantation) major vascular/endovascular, orthopaedics, colorectal, urological, and ENT/Maxillofacial specialities.

The Freeman also has an extensive surgical robotics programme involving urology, ENT, gynaecology, hepatobiliary and colorectal surgery. We have a well-established pre-assessment clinic that has been recognised by the CQC as national leaders in preoperative assessment, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and outcome prediction following major surgery and a nationally acclaimed acute pain service.
