The Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) receives high numbers of emergency surgical patients throughout Leicester and Leicestershire daily specialising in gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery. Patients from the Accident & Emergency, from GP services, community hospitals, District nurse services to name a few. It is a busy and exciting environment to work in and will allow a nurse to develop her nurse assessment skills and extending roles at a fast pace

University Hospitals Leicester is one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England offering a wide range of general and specialist services, providing an environment that is both challenging and rewarding.

In the next 18 months we will be consolidating our General Surgery emergency take at the Leicester Royal Infirmary site moving from the Leicester General Hospital. We are currently creating a bigger triage area to accommodate our acute surgical patients along with another emergency surgical ward adjacent to the SAU. This is an exciting time for us to redesign the patient pathway along with influencing the refurbishment and development of our existing accommodation and for you to be a part of it..

You will be required to provide support, specialised knowledge and expertise in the day to day care and management of all patients coming through the ward. Working within this busy environment will provide you with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate you’re clinical, managerial and leadership skills

We are seeking an exceptional individual to apply for this exciting opportunity who is enthusiastic, energetic and thrive in this fast paced acute nursing environment. You will regularly take charge of the ward. As an effective leader and role model you will work flexibly as a member of the ward team, and in support of the Ward Sister ensure standards are maintained, evaluated, and where necessary improved.

In addition, you will play a key role in ensuring patients, carers and clinical staff have the necessary education and training in order to care for and manage the surgical patient’s effectively.

You will be an effective role model and be involved in helping to develop all aspects of the ward management including influencing and promoting new ways of working within the team. We encourage you to also be involved in acting on patient feedback in order to improve the clinical and patients environment to continuously improve our care delivery.

The successful candidates will be given a specially designed development Programme to support and guide them in their new role and giving the keys skills to allow them to perform their role to a high and efficient standard.
