Biomedical Scientist Specialist

Job Reference: 918-HX4332

Employer:
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT)
Department:
Stem Cells Birmingham - Service
Location:
Birmingham Vincent Drive
Salary:
£30,401 to £37,267 pa

The work performed by Stem Cells and Immunotherapies (SCI) under the Cellular & Molecular Therapies (CMT) function in NHSBT is central to the provision and improvement of life saving stem cell transplants. Our SCI laboratories support over half of all haemopoietic stem cell transplants performed in England each year through a network of GMP grade laboratories in 7 specialist facilities across the country. Working with academic partners in Centres of Excellence, we aim to be at the forefront of clinical improvements related to these transplants and to use our expertise in GMP, quality and regulatory matters to promote other areas of research. NHS Blood and Transplant also supplies blood and blood components, and manages 5,500 organ and cornea transplants every year.

In Birmingham, our SCI department provides specialist services to hospitals covering a large geographical area. We work with peripheral blood derived stem cells, umbilical cord blood and bone marrow cells, collected for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. We have close partnerships with various transplant programmes and other groups undertaking clinical trials, ground breaking research and service development. The successful applicant will be highly motivated, ‘team focussed’ with good time management skills, and above all a willingness to ‘muck in’ with whatever tasks are required at the time. The work will involve routine service provision, specialist cell processing, and/or other service support or development activities. We would expect the successful candidate to be flexible and willing to adapt. Experience of working in a CMT laboratory, and familiarity with stem cell processing and/or flow cytometry techniques would be an advantage. Candidates will be required to participate in the department on call rota, following appropriate training, which may involve weekend and/or weekday evening/overnight cover, the details of which can be discussed at interview.

You should be an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with relevant post- registration experience, including a specialist qualification / experience in CMT or Transfusion/Transplantation Science.

In return you’ll benefit from an excellent pension and the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, using modern equipment and practices, where you can develop your specialist skills and scientific education.

The normal working hours for this post are 37.5 hours per week, 11:00 – 19:00 Monday – Friday, plus on-call on a rota basis.
