CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN IN RESPIRATORY MEDICINE with an interest in Asthma

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Respiratory consultant with an interest in Asthma to join our diverse and successful team at Glenfield Hospital, helping to shape and lead our specialist services. This is a newly created post that have arisen through increased demands in our specialised out-patient services.

The UHL Asthma Service based at Glenfield Hospital is a well-established service within the Respiratory Medicine, the Trust, and the East Midlands. Its strengths include:

Close links with both the Universities of Leicester and Loughborough. We host the NIHR Leicester Respiratory Biomedical Research Centre, the East Midlands Breathomics Pathology Node (EMBER), the national NIHR-EME BEAT Severe Asthma clinical trials program and are a core component of the Leicester Cancer Research UK Thoracic Oncology Centre. Respiratory Medicine also has a large teaching portfolio and the post holders will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate training.

We have a broad academic and internationally leading portfolio in asthma including basic mechanisms of disease, clinical trials and stratified medicine and asthma phenotyping using platform approaches (e.g. metabolome, microbiome, imaging).

The airways disease group has strong affiliations with the Leicester Clinical trials unit with several local and national trials programs underway in asthma. The group also collaborates closely with the cardiovascular and lifestyle theme of the NIHR-BRC in several programs.

Key tasks include:

  1. Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
  2. To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients.
  3. To promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
  4. Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
  5. Supervise and train junior medical staff.
  6. To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
  7. Teaching, research and administration.
  8. To proactively develop asthma services.
  9. To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
