The post holder will be responsible for the operational management of the Trust’s Safeguarding Teams, providing leadership and direction to the Named Professionals for Childrens, Maternity and Adult Safeguarding to ensure the Trust meets its obligations under the Children’s Act 2004, Care Act 2014 and other relevant legislation and guidance.

    • The post holder will lead the development of the Trust’s strategy regarding all aspects of Safeguarding, working with key internal and external stakeholders to deliver a comprehensive and cohesive safe and effective safeguarding service for the Trust and wider community.
    • To provide expert level of knowledge, leadership and professional advice in relation to safeguarding vulnerable children and adults at risk, across the Trust, using lessons learnt from national and local Case Reviews, best practice evidence and research.
    • Provide visible, accessible and authoritative presence within the Trust in regard to Safeguarding Children, MARAC, Domestic Abuse and Adults at Risk, related activity.
    • The Post holder will ensure robust processes are in place to enable the Trust to participate in case reviews.
    • To support the Executive Chief Nurse and the Deputy Chief Nurse in ensuring that all aspects of safeguarding are regularly reported to the Trust Board and the Safeguarding Committee.

We are looking to recruit an experienced senior safeguarding professional who will be clinically and managerially responsible and accountable for the whole safeguarding service within The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicant must be passionate about safeguarding and able to demonstrate the ability to work strategically, be innovative and able to demonstrate a high level of experience at an operational and senior strategic management level in a complex NHS environment. Knowledge of operational, personnel and financial management and a wide understanding of NHS management strategy and national safeguarding policy content are essential.

The successful applicant will have the ability to provide strong, professional leadership to the safeguarding teams and provide a Trust wide Strategic Lead on behalf of the Executive Chief Nurse in order to ensure the Trust provides safe, effective and well-led services which safeguard the vulnerable. The post holder will ensure that all statutory regulations and performance requirements related to safeguarding are fully met and will also support the Trust’s active participation in multi-agency partnership work across the City.

Essential Criteria as follows:

    • Professional Registration in a relevant discipline e.g. Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Allied Health Professional.
    • Highly developed specialist knowledge of safeguarding in relation to Children and Adults at Risk of Abuse demonstrated at Masters Level or equivalent both through a relevant graduate level education, supplemented by further training and development and clinical experience.
    • Significant clinical experience as a senior practitioner which will have included clinical practice working with vulnerable individuals.
    • Significant experience at senior management level within a relevant multi-agency setting.
    • Experience of strategic planning and management of safeguarding services.
    • Knowledge of national policy, legislation and requirements with regard to Child Protection and Adults at Risk.
    • In depth knowledge and understanding of NHS and Health and Social Care reforms and inspection processes.
    • Significant experience of multi-agency working.
    • Strong leadership skills.
    • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
    • Highly skilled negotiator.
    • IT literate.
    • Able to demonstrate a good understanding of NHS.
