Mid and South Essex health and social care organisations serve a population of around 1.2 million people. Within the health system currently, there are three acute hospitals trusts including Basildon & Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust and Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with a combined income of c£945 million. Recognising that greater collaboration across this part of Essex is required to solve long standing financial, quality and operational challenges, agreement was reached in a number of stages since 2017 to work in an increasingly collaborative way between the Trusts to undertake the reconfiguration of clinical services, supported by an "in common" governance and leadership structure. Since early 2017 we have benefitted from a single executive team across the three organisations. Since January 2019, all of our Trust Boards and our committees meet "in common" only as a matter of course.

In January 2018, the Trust Boards with support from commissioners and from our regulators including NHS Improvement, to pursue a merger of the three organisations. Subject to regulatory approval, we will merge in April 2020 to become Mid & South Essex University Hospitals – a new single organisation, having university teaching and NHS foundation trust status. The new organisation presents an ideal opportunity for you to take a leading and influential role both internally and externally within a health and social care system

The post holder will work as part of the Legal Services Department and with colleagues across the Trust to manage clinical and non-clinical claims from receipt to settlement. In addition, the post holder will assist in the administration of Inquests, and attend Inquests on behalf of the Trust, as well as other ad hoc legal matters.

The post holder will identify through effective claims management any changes to services that need to be made to improve and sustain a positive experience for patients, clients, carers and staff. Also to make and record risk management recommendations and outcomes upon completion of each claim / Inquest.

In all of the above the post holder will liaise with staff at all levels within the Trust and with external bodies, organisations and groups and will be expected to contribute to training for Trust staff on claims management and Inquests.

The successful post holder will have experience of working in a legal environment and demonstrate strong organisation and administrative skills. Although training will be provided, legal experience is essential for this role.

The three NHS trusts within the Mid and South Essex University Hospitals Group (“the Group”) are planning to formally merge on 1st April 2020.

Whilst your application may be for a position at one of the three Trusts within the Group, in the event that the merger takes place and you are employed on or after 1st April 2020, your employment will transfer into the Group under the protection of the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations also known as TUPE.

Your contractual employment rights will be unaffected by this transfer.
