We are excited to be developing a Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) at the Cumberland Infirmary site in Carlisle (CIC). This will comprise a 10 bedded HASU at CIC, with 25 acute and rehabilitation beds and a further 15 acute and rehabilitation beds at our West Cumberland Hospital site in Whitehaven (WCH).

Successful candidates will join the newly forming team and have the opportunity to contribute to this exciting development for our patients in North Cumbria and the establishment of a high quality stroke service across North Cumbria.

The Stroke Department is a friendly and caring environment providing care to the most critically / acutely ill patients. Our current Stroke wards regularly receive excellent feedback from patients and their families about our caring staff. The aim of HASU is to provide holistic care for acute stroke patients, utilising a co-ordinated multidisciplinary approach, resulting in optimal patient outcomes. Excellent communication is vital as we work with a mixture of specialist nursing teams, medics and therapists. We aim to provide an individualised and supportive environment for patients in which to deliver this specialised care for patients following a stroke.

We are looking for nurses who are seeking to increase their Stroke nursing experience and really want to work in this rewarding and innovative environment. In return we will offer you excellent learning and developmental opportunities; we will support your personal growth through regular personal development planning and our educational strategy. Newly qualified staff can benefit from the Trust preceptorship programme (also available for experienced nurses joining us from out of the area or from other Trusts) and in addition all new staff will enjoy an induction programme, specific to the HASU. This will include the Trust induction programme and Stroke placements with the Stroke specialist nurses, all therapists, and the opportunity to observe and be involved in clinical investigations.
