Employment specialist in Mental Health – band 4, fixed term or secondment until March 2021

Calderdale is part of the NHS England initiative to expand access to employment for people living with serious mental health conditions. The Individual Placement Support (IPS) model of employment support is an innovative and evidence based way of working and we are currently seeking an Employment Specialist work in line with IPS.

This is a full time 37.5 hour post, and is a fixed term or secondment opportunity, until March 2021, with any continuation of this being subject to funding after March 2021.

This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of widening access to employment for people with mental health conditions while working for South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust. The post will be based in Calderdale within Community mental health teams where you will deliver employment support to individuals with severe mental health conditions across Calderdale and be a highly valued member of a team of mental health professionals, which includes psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists, nurses and psychologists.

90% of people with severe mental illness say they want to work, but currently only 8% are in work. Getting into employment can be a critical part of a recovery journey, so as an employment specialist you will focus on providing motivational, supportive and person-centred advice to enable service users to secure paid employment. You will work as a member of the multi-disciplinary Core and Enhanced mental health teams in the community pathway in Calderdale and carry a caseload of 20-25 people. You will help to raise expectations around the ability of service users to access paid employment and support people into paid employment related to their preferences and skills.

You will be passionate about joining us in this exciting new role, and be willing both to help to develop the service and transform lives through enabling people to gain paid employment. You will need a good understanding of people and of mental health conditions, along with experience of local networking and partnership work such as with the DWP. This is a dynamic and diverse role where no day is ever the same – determination and strong listening skills are essential as is being able to take initiative. Working positively with local employers and negotiating job opportunities is a key part of what you will be doing.

You will be part of a small IPS team within the Calderdale mental health teams while having support and supervision with the IPS Team leader. Full specialist training is funded for this role.

As part of the successful NHS England IPS bid, this full-time post is initially a fixed term contract until March 2021 with any continuation of this being subject to funding.

We are also able to consider this post as a secondment opportunity until March 2021. For secondment, approval from your manager as to whether you would be able to take up a secondment is required before applying for the post.

Please contact for any inquiries about the post or  find out more about how IPS can make a difference to people’s lives at our recruitment information session on Monday 18th November at 3.00pm at Hope Street Resource Centre, Hope Street, Halifax, HX1 5DW

Post closes on Thursday 21st November.
