Consultant in Microbiology

Applications are invited for this exciting opportunity for a Consultant Microbiologist to join two experienced consultants at Northern Devon NHS Trust. The ideal applicant must be prepared to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country whilst contributing to the high standards of patient care delivered by this small and innovative trust. The successful applicant will take the role of antimicrobial stewardship lead.

Located in the South West of England, North Devon is recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty. It extends from the edge of Exmoor in the east to Lundy Island in the west and the Taw Valley in the south providing contrasts of moor land, downs, valleys, rugged cliffs and award winning sandy beaches, thus catering for a wide range of interests and outdoor activities. If you are not familiar with the area please watch the short video: “What it's like working at NDHT”.

The Trust provides a wide range of hospital, community health and social care services to over 160,000 residents across North Devon and to thousands of visitors the region receives every summer.

For an informal discussion, prospective candidates are welcome to contact either Dr Tom Lewis (Lead Clinician) on 01271 322798, Dr David Richards (Consultant Microbiologist) on 01271 322320 or Lee Luscombe (Pathology Manager) on 01271 311754. Informal visits are encouraged.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council with licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion on the GMC’s Specialist Register (or expected entry within six months from the date of interview).

We actively encourage applications from all sectors of the community regardless of sex, age, racial origin, religion, belief or disability and we are committed to Equal Opportunities

All disabled applicants meeting the essential criteria of a post will be offered an interview. Should you, as a result of a disability, require reasonable adjustments to be made as part of the recruitment process (eg, venue access, information format, interpreter, etc) please do not hesitate to make a member of the recruitment team aware.

We offer flexible working arrangements, career opportunities and encourage work-life balance.

We thank you for your interest in us and look forward to receiving your application.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
