Healthcare Science Assistant (Medical Laboratory Assistant) X2 - 1 Permanent and 1 for 12 months in the first instance

We have two Medical Laboratory Assistant positions available in this expanding Diagnostic Genetics laboratory. The purpose of the MLA posts are to provide technical support for a wide range of Laboratory Service teams within the Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Laboratory. The main roles will be in the production of chromosome preparations, cell culture, nucleic acid extraction and solution preparation, record keeping, storage of samples, pre-karyotyping of G-Banded preparations, stock handling, setting up PCR reactions for DNA sequencing which all in turn support the clinical service offered by over 120 staff. The post holder will additionally aid in the maintenance of the laboratory infrastructure and cleanliness of the laboratory.

Successful applicants will be methodical, tidy, able to work well in a team with good communication skills and able to meet deadlines. Applicants need a minimum of 2 A levels or equivalent in Science related subjects or relevant laboratory experience. Previous laboratory experience would be an advantage; however, full training will be provided. There will be a requirement for weekend and bank holiday working on a rotational basis.

As part of the Diagnostics Directorate, the laboratory provides specialist services over a wide range of disorders which includes molecular pathology, cytogenetics and pharmacogenetics.
