Trust Doctor in Emergency Medicine

Job Reference: 415-MP399-19

Northern Devon Healthcare Trust - Medical & Dental
Emergency Medicine
£37,191 pa

We have a number of vacancies for junior doctors (CT1 equivalent or above) in Emergency Medicine at the Northern Devon District Hospital (NDDH). These are stand-alone posts and start on the 7 August 2019 for 6 months initially with a view to a possible further 6 month extension. Rotations with paediatrics and/or acute general medicine are also available.

The Northern Devon District Hospital provides a service to a population of 156,000 and to the thousands of visitors the region receives every summer. The department sees approximately 45,000 new patients per year of whom approximately 25% are children.

The successful applicants will join an enthusiastic team that supports and delivers a modern, comprehensive emergency service.  This is a small, friendly department with big ideas and a commitment to improving our service by embracing change and innovation. We pride ourselves on support for all our staff and our junior doctors enjoy direct shop floor supervision and educational and academic support. The department is rated highly on our junior doctor satisfaction survey and we receive excellent feedback from doctors in training and trust grade doctors alike. The junior tier comprises ten doctors on a full shift rota.

Trust doctors work alongside trainees in foundation, ACCS & GPVTS programs and receive the same training opportunities as these doctors. This includes allocation of a clinical supervisor along with study leave with a study budget.  . This is a great opportunity to gain broad clinical experience during a bridging year between foundation and specialty training in a beautiful part of the country.

The hospital is a designated Trauma Unit and Acute Stroke Unit and the department is responsible for the reception, resuscitation and hyperacute treatment of all major trauma and stroke patients. The hospital has a helipad within the grounds for both receival of patients and to facilitate transfer to tertiary referral centers.

The Emergency Department is currently involved in and actively recruiting to a number of national research projects. The department has recently undergone a significant refurbishment to co-locate a primary care facility, allowing for streaming of appropriate patients directly to primary care. The ED has a large four bay (including one dedicated paediatric bay) resuscitation room.  There is a separate children’s waiting area and a dedicated paediatric cubicle.

North Devon is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The hospital sits on the outskirts of Barnstaple, and is close to the world class surf beaches of Saunton, Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe. There are two national parks, Exmoor and Dartmoor in close proximity and direct rail access to Exeter.

For an informal discussion or to visit the hospital, prospective candidates are welcome to contact Dr Liam Kevern ( or Ms Fionn Bellis ( by email or via the ED secretary on 01271 311527.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
