Online applications are invited to apply for a consultant in medical microbiology commencing asap. This post is permanent full time position, but part time applications will be considered.


You will join a current team of 10 other consultants (3 Medical Microbiologists, 3 joint Medical Microbiology / Infectious Diseases consultants, 2 Clinical Virologists, 1 Infectious Diseases consultant / Senior Lecturer and 1 Professor of Infectious Diseases) in the Department of Infection at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT). The post holder will join a dynamic team of consultants in a rapidly evolving and cohesive infection department which provides the full spectrum of Medical Microbiology, Virology, Inpatient and Outpatient Infectious Diseases, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) and Infection Prevention and Control services.


University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest acute trusts and teaching hospitals in the UK, providing services to some 1.9 million people living in Southampton and south Hampshire, plus specialist services including neurosciences, cardiac services, cancer care (including allogeneic stem cell transplantation), major trauma services and children's intensive care to a wider area of central southern England. The Trust is also a major centre for teaching and research in association with the University of Southampton and partners include the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust. UHS gained foundation trust status in 2011.


Microbiology and Virology laboratory services are provided by the on-site UKAS ISO15189 accredited diagnostic laboratory, which processes around 600,000 specimens per annum and provides a comprehensive service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology and parasitology and has a well-equipped molecular facility.


The post holder will be expected to contribute to the departmental activities listed above, including supporting the delivery of clinical, advisory and laboratory services.


Consultants are encouraged to support the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching curriculum and to contribute to collaborative research work, as well as to contribute to the supervision of Infection trainees.


Hampshire provides excellent housing, schooling and recreational facilities, including for sailing enthusiasts, as well as the beautiful countryside provided by the National Parks of the New Forest and the South Downs. There are good road links and a fast direct rail service to London Waterloo. Domestic and European air services are provided from Southampton Airport.


Applicants should have a CCT or be on the GMC’s Specialist Register. Applicants who are within six months of obtaining their CCT on the date of interview may also apply.


Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role. Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.
