The Cancer Education Lead will be expected to carry out a gap analysis of current education needs across Mid Essex, Southend and Basildon hospitals within the Cancer Nursing workforce.

Within the role the aim will be to standardise cancer nursing competencies for the ward staff that care predominantly for cancer patients. In conjunction with Associate Director of Nursing for cancer and Trust Lead Cancer nurses develop a developmental programme for new and associate Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs). Review and standardise competencies and level of advanced practice for Cancer CNSs.

With Cancer leads – work to develop cancer career pathway for nursing within MSB.

The role will work alongside clinical staff one day a week as a Cancer Practice Development post, to increase learning and knowledge on the front line.

The role will help support the implementation and extension of the Oncology rotation programme across the three hospital sites.

Working at a strategic level the post will engage and work with Heads of Dept. and School Deans of Higher Education Institutes (HEI), locally and nationally.

Scope cancer and palliative care education programmes that are available locally/nationally to develop a reference portfolio for staff and their managers.

Work in collaboration with Senior Cancer Clinicians to develop strategies for Cancer Nursing across the Division to develop a robust education service at the Cancer Centre and reflect the education of a leading Cancer centre.

Support the delivery of an ongoing cancer education programme and support further development.

To develop alongside Trust education teams a programme that enables staff to achieve their full potential and clinical effectiveness with the aim of continually striving to improve the patient experience – based on outcome of training needs analysis.

Be education lead for advanced communication courses for all healthcare professionals within cancer care.
