The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK, and is regarded as a leader in the field of orthopaedics both in the UK and world-wide.

The RNOH provides a comprehensive range of neuro-musculoskeletal health care, ranging from the most acute spinal injury or complex bone tumour to orthopaedic medicine and specialist rehabilitation for chronic back pain sufferers. This broad range of services is unique within the NHS.

As a national centre of excellence, the RNOH treats patients from across the country, many of whom have been referred by other hospital consultants for second opinions or for treatment of complex or rare conditions.

Patients benefit from a team of highly specialised consultants, many of whom are nationally and internationally recognised for their expertise and experience. Consultants are supported in their work by nurses, therapists and other specialist clinical staff who are trained and are experts in their particular fields of orthopaedic care.

The RNOH plays a major role in teaching, 20% of all UK orthopaedic surgeons receive training here. Our teaching and clinical effectiveness are enhanced by our work in research and development and our academic links with University College, London. Research departments at Stanmore include the Institute of Orthopaedics, the Centre for Disability Research and Innovation, the Institute of Human Performance and the Centre for Biomedical Engineering

The RNOH works closely with other hospitals and trusts, with whom we have joint appointments to ensure maximum availability of specialist skills for patients. Our patients benefit from access to Aspire Leisure Centre which is located on site and hosts first-class facilities for able-bodied and disabled people.


The original Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) review into elective orthopaedics marked an important landmark for the NHS and orthopaedic surgery. By using trusts’ own data to identify unwarranted variations, the review produced a series of recommendations which have helped improve clinical care and patients outcomes in the orthopaedic specialty, whilst saving the NHS millions of pounds.

The GIRFT methodology has now been expanded to cover more than 30 specialties following funding from the Department of Health. It forms a key part of the roll-out of the recommendations in Lord Carter’s report (February 2016) in operational performance and productivity in acute hospitals and is now a partnership between the RNOH and the Operational Productivity Directorate of NHS Improvement (NHSI).

All posts are currently limited to Fixed Term Contracts or Secondment from your current employer.

As part of the national programme your role will be to oversee the delivery of a tranche of national reports, each covering a major specialty within the NHS.

These reports will detail key findings from clinical visits across the country and, supported by robust data, will make the case for a series of transformative changes to the way care is delivered. You will then work with key stakeholders in the NHS to drive national policy so as to deliver these changes.

The reports will be developed by working closely with eminent clinical experts, supported by a project team including managers, data analysts and communications and writing professionals.

In order to ensure that the recommended changes are implementable, the post-holder will be expected to perform extensive stakeholder engagement and testing.

Following publication, the post-holder will also work with GIRFT Regional Hubs to monitor and support local implementation of the recommendations, and to report progress up to senior national stakeholders (including the Secretary of State) and national communications channels.

Follow-up reports will also be commissioned for each specialty after a defined period of implementation, reflecting on progress and issues.
