Fortescue Ward

This is an exciting opportunity for a band 5 nurse to join our friendly team on Fortescue Ward.

Fortescue ward specialises in the care of people suffering with Dementia, Frailty and long term conditions requiring management and rehabilitation. Fortescue is part of the Unscheduled Care Directorate and also manages the more acutely unwell older patient.

Our aim is to promote and maintain independence in patients with a focus on “home first” as our priority. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to engage with the wider community and voluntary groups. We have a full time discharge coordinator and health and social care support to facilitate complex discharges.

We have 5 qualified mentors on the ward including 2 sign off mentors and actively encourage learners at whatever stage of their career. We are pleased to have 5 apprentices on the ward, 2 nursing associate students and student nurses. We also support workplace experience for college students and work shadowing days. The ward provides a strong opportunity for candidates who wish to develop their teaching and mentoring skills.

The Ward works closely with the wider multidisciplinary including therapists and volunteers who run an exercise group daily, and cream tea afternoon on a Tuesday.

Successful candidates will gain experience of working within the wider multidisciplinary team and be part of improving the experience for our patients.

We are proud of our low falls rate and use bay tagging and sensor mats to keep patients safe. We are also proud of the positive feedback from patients, visitors and patient surveys which is a credit to our team.

Our team are friendly and welcoming and offer a caring and supportive environment for new staff to develop in their career. We have a flexible approach to rostering to enable staff to achieve a good work life balance which we view as essential to be happy at work.

North Devon is a fantastic place to live and work and successful candidates will benefit from the supportive environment in a smaller Trust such as Northern Devon Healthcare Trust.

We welcome applications from experienced and newly qualified Nurses. The post involves rotation to days and nights. We aim to offer flexibility to meet everyone’s needs and can offer part time or full time hours. We also offer paid taster days where potential candidates can come and spend a shift with us or just a few hours to experience our positive and supportive working environment before applying.

Potential Candidates are welcome to visit the ward or contact Tracey Jobling on 01271 322330 for further information.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
