Objectives

The objectives are

  • To reduce isolation for patients/carers

  • To increase support available to patients/carers

  • To improve the health and wellbeing of patients/carers within the remit of the befriender role

CISS offers support and advice for those providing unpaid care to a family member, neighbour or friend. To further complement the role of our dedicated carer support workers, we want friendly, positive volunteers to befriend the carers that we work with. The caring role can be isolating for some people, and it is important to us that the carers in our service feel valued and understood. As a befriender, you will be playing a valuable role in providing companionship for an isolated carer, by talking to them about their interests or hobbies and checking in on their general wellbeing on a fortnightly basis. This could be going for a coffee, going out for lunch or giving them a call on the phone, depending on what is most suitable for you and the carer. You will be matched to a carer based on your personality and interests so that you and the carer get the most out of your time volunteering with us. Not only will you make a valuable contribution to the life of a carer through offering caring and responsible support, befriending also comes with a great sense of accomplishment and reward of helping someone feel confident and positive about life.
